GWU Routes Texas-Pan American, 82-54; Reeves Becomes GWU Win's Leader
November 28, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Norman, Oklahoma - Gardner-Webb head coach Rick Reeves received his 98th career win at Gardner-Webb in dominating fashion, as the Runnin' Bulldogs controlled the game from start to finish, using 22 assists and 45.3 percent shooting en route to an 82-54 win over Texas-Pan American in the Runnin' Bulldogs final game of the BTI Tip-Off Classic hosted by the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.
Reeves' 98th win at Gardner-Webb gives him the most wins by a single coach in the Runnin' Bulldog women's basketball 36-year history.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carried over its team effort and hot shooting from Saturday's nine point loss to No. 10 Oklahoma, running out to a 15-3 lead to start the game, as four different players scored in the first four minutes of play.
The intensity and production did not drop off over the next five minutes, as head coach Rick Reeves went to the bench as the Runnin' Bulldogs ran out to a 17 point lead at 22-5 with 12:17 to play in the first half.
GWU did not take its foot off the gas pedal for the remainder of the half, as the Runnin' Bulldogs outscored the Lady Broncs 12-0 in points in the paint, 8-0 in second chance points and 16-4 in bench points, all while dishing out 13 assists in the first 20 minutes of play.
However, it was the team effort on the defensive end that was the difference in the opening frame, as Gardner-Webb forced Texas-Pan American into 10 turnovers and held them to 26.9 percent shooting from the floor to take a 39-17 lead into the halftime break.
Unlike in Friday's contest in which the Runnin' Bulldogs let a 16 point halftime lead slip away in a loss, Gardner-Webb outscored the Lady Broncs 12-4 in the first five minutes of the second half to run out to 30 point lead at 51-21.
Over the rest of the contest, the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to play hard as the Lady Broncs never got any closer than 23 points in the 82-54 win.
For the game, GWU outscored the Lady Broncs 30-8 in the paint, 23-9 in points off turnovers, and 27-13 in bench points for the game.
Gardner-Webb had 10 players score in the contest and was led by senior guard Monique Hudson's 20 points. Oklahoma native Breynna Winkler poured in a career-high 10 points, while also hauling in a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Brianna Dillard added 11 points, while Dominique Hudson had 10 points and a game-high seven assists.
Freshman guard Jasmine Dale tallied a career-high nine points, while Erin Boggan came off the bench to score a career-high five points in the win.
For the Lady Broncs it was all CeMonay Newell, as she poured in a game-high 23 points, knocking down seven three-pointers for the game.
The win snapped GWU's three game losing streak and pushed the Runnin' Bulldogs to 2-2 all-time versus the Lady Broncs, having won the last two meetings in the series.
Reeves 98 wins now puts him only two away from his 100th career win while at the helm of the Runnin' Bulldogs women's basketball program.
Gardner-Webb (3-3) will remain on the road for its next contest, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Kennesaw, Ga. to do battle with the Lady Owls of Kennesaw State on Thursday night, December 2, at 7 p.m.
Texas-Pan American (4-3) will also return to action next week, as the Lady Broncs will take on Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. on December 1st.
