WEEK 1: WRESTLING WEEKLY MATCH NOTES
November 03, 2010 | Wrestling
Gardner-Webb is set for the 2010-11 season to begin, opening up
its season with back-to-back days of competition. GWU will
kick-off its 2010-11 slate with three dual matches at Virginia
against Rider University, Anderson University in South Carolina and
Virginia on Saturday, November 6th. Then the Runnin' Bulldog
grapplers will return to the mat on Sunday, November 7th, to
compete as individuals at the 2010 Hokie Open hosted by Virginia
Tech in Salem, Va.
KEY RETURNERS IN 2010-11
Gardner-Webb has a number of key returners in 2010-11 that will
look to make an impact all season long. Returning with 22 wins from
a year ago is Alex Medved at 157 and his twin brother Ryan Medved
who earned 20 wins at 149 in 2009-10. Redshirt-senior Jonathan
Velazquez, who finished second at the 2010 NCAA East Regionals at
184, returns this season after posting 15 wins, including four
major decisions and two pin falls a year ago. Travis Porter
returns at 197, where he psoted 15 wins and three pin fall
victories a year ago, while Richie Spicel and Jason Porter can both
prove to be solid at 141 and 184 this season for GWU if both can
stay healthy.
D. PORTER IS GONE, WHO WILL CARRY ON THE NCAA
TRADITION
With Dustin Porter gone, the question this season is who will carry
on the tradition for the GWU wrestling program in qualifying for
the NCAA National Championships in March. The front runners to do
so include returners Alex Medved at 157, Jonathan Velazquez at 175,
Ryan Medved at 149, Richie Spicel at 144 and Travis Porter at 197.
Newcomers Erin O'Dell at 165 and Daris Wass at 125 could also make
a run at the NCAA's, if the two freshmen can quickly adjust to the
Division I level on the mat.
HEAVY SHOES TO FILL
Over the last four seasons, the Runnin' Bulldogs wrestling squad
has a constant in the lineup at the heavyweight position in
four-time East Regional Champion and NCAA qualifier Dustin Porter.
However, this season, the Runnin' Bulldogs do not have a
heavyweight on its roster.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The Runnin' Bulldogs wrestling squad is full of youth this season,
as nine freshmen grace Coach Wince's roster this season. In fact,
Gardner-Webb 12 underclassman, not counting the six
redshirt-sophomores on the roster this season.
A NEW FOUNDATION
The Gardner-Webb wrestling team is establishing "A New Foundation"
this season, literally, as the Runnin' Bulldogs are in the midst of
moving and upgrading to a new wrestling facility. The Runnin'
Bulldogs have raised money and worked with the town of Boiling
Springs to reinovate a gym, formerly part of Town Hall, for the new
wrestling facilities for the Gardner-Webb grapplers.
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE COACHING STAFF
The Gardner-Webb wrestling team has two new additions to the
coaching staff in 2010-11, as Conor Beebe was named as the Graduate
Assistant Coach and former GWU standout Dustin Porter is a
volunteer coach while finishing his degree requirements. Also
former assistant Daniel Elliott was promoted to the Associate Head
Coach position in late August.
