Runnin' Bulldogs Defeat Radford, 1-0, Friday Evening in 2010 Big South Women's Soccer Quarterfinals
November 06, 2010 | Women's Soccer
RADFORD, Va. -A strike from junior forward Stephanie Benshoof in the 78th minute led No. 7 Gardner-Webb to a 1-0 upset over No. 2 Radford in the fourth match of the 2010 Big South Women's Soccer Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting Thursday at Patrick D. Cupp Stadium in Radford, Va.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will play No. 6 Liberty Saturday night at 7:00 PM in the semifinals, its first semifinal appearance since joining the Big South in 2008.
Benshoof collected the ball inside the 18-yard box and fired a strike on the far side to the near-side post and past a diving Che' Brown to net the game's only score. The goal was the third of the 2010 season for the Huntersville, N.C. native.
The Highlanders had many opportunities in front of the net, but couldn't capitalize on any of them, as Gardner-Webb's defense held strong and cleared the ball out of harm's way.
Despite the loss, Radford held the advantage in shots 21-13, but Gardner-Webb edged the Highlanders in corner kicks, 5-4. Chelsea Hearne made 10 big saves for Gardner-Webb, while her counterpart Brown made six saves, including two diving punch-outs that prevented the Runnin' Bulldogs from two assured goals.
"Defensively we did a good job tonight and both goalkeepers played great tonight." stated Gardner-Webb head coach Kevin Mounce following the match. "We knew tonight it was going to be tough and we're just happy to advance and we're going to enjoy this and get ready for Liberty tomorrow."
Gardner-Webb improves to 7-9-4 on the year, while Radford ends its season at 12-7-1.
