Six Different Runnin' Bulldogs Score a Win on the Mat on Saturday

Charlottesville, Va. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team opened up its 2010-11 season with a tri-meet hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs suffered three team losses on the day, as GWU fell to Virginia 50-0, to Rider 32-6 and Anderson (S.C.) 22-19 in the dual meet action.
Gardner-Webb had six different Runnin' Bulldog grapplers pick up wins on Saturday afternoon, highlighted by redshirt-sophomore Alex Medved's two victories at 157.
Alex Medved picked up an 8-5 decision over Ramon Santiago to put GWU on the board in the dual match versus Rider and then picked up his second win of the day by way of an injury default at 157 against Anderson (S.C.).
Redshirt-sophomore Travis Porter was the lone other GWU grappler to pick up a victory in the Rider match, as he registered a 6-0 shutout win over Chris Spagnola at 197.
The other four wins on the day for GWU came in the Anderson (S.C.) dual match, as the Runnin' Bulldogs had a slight 19-16 lead over the Trojans heading into the heavyweight match which GWU had to forfeit, giving Anderson (S.C.) five points and the 22-19 win.
Redshirt-sophomore Ryan Medved picked up a win at 149, defeating Dan Telhada of Anderson (S.C.) 8-2, while redshirt-sophomore Justin Guthrie scored a 9-3 decision over Anderson's Jordan Lide at 165.
Gardner-Webb's Richie Spicel earned an 11-3 major decision win over Calbe Swinson of Anderson (S.C.) at 141, while freshman Alex Hamm picked up his first career victory with a 7-3 win over the Trojans' Ian Harper at 133.
GWU will not have long to regroup, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will have a number of grapplers competing as individuals in the sinlge-elimination 2010 Hokie Open tomorrow, November 7, in Salem, Va.
