Salem, Va. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team had 12 different Runnin' Bulldogs, including former Gardner-Webb grappler and current volunteer coach Dustin Porter, compete at the 2010 Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech in Salem, Va. on Sunday.
The young Runnin' Bulldogs posted seven wins on the day, highlighted by two wins from redshirt-sophomore Travis Porter and his older brother and former Runnin' Bulldog Dustin Porter.
Gardner-Webb had two grapplers compete at the 125-pound weight class, as sophomore Brett Kostern posted a 1-2 record, while freshman Robbie Golde went winless in his two bouts. Kostern opened up with an 11-6 win over Johnathan Pope of VMI, before suffering a technical fall loss to eventual champion James Nicholson of Old Dominion to fall into the consolation bracket where he then suffered a pin fall loss at 6:16 to Brett Boston of Appalachian State to get eliminated from the invitational.
At 133, senior Michael Slaughter suffered two losses to go 0-2 on the day, while freshman Alex Hamm finished the day at 1-2, picking up a 6-2 win over Adam Wilson of CWC before falling in back-to-back matches including a 20-5 technical fall loss to Mike Rappo of UNC who took second-place overall at the 133-pound weight class.
Redshirt-sophomore Richie Spicel went 0-2 at 141, while sophomore Morgan McDaniel also fell in his lone two matches of the day at 149.
At 159, redshirt-sophomore Alex Medved bounced back from an 11-6 loss to Trent Weathermar of Iowa State to defeat Phil Ramirez of King College 5-1. In his next bout, Medved suffered his second loss of the day to Josh Condon of Chattanooga, 2-1, who ended up taking fifth-place overall for the 159-pound weight class.
Like at 141 and 149, the Runnin' Bulldogs failed to score a win at 165, 174 and 184, as redshirt-sophomore Justin Guthrie and freshmen Erin O'Dell and Taylor McClain all went 0-2 for the open.
At 197, Travis Porter started off with a 5-1 loss to Kelby Smith of the Citadel, only to win his next match 6-3 over Sam Kuntz of Chattanooga to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Porter then picked up his second win of the day in his next match, scoring a 4-1 decision over Zach Anderson of Newberry College. However, his run would end there, as Porter came up just short in his next bout, falling to Phil Hawes of Iowa State 3-2 to be eliminated from the field.
Former Runnin' Bulldog and current volunteer coach Dustin Porter, who wrestled unattached, picked up a 7-3 win over Derek Papagianopoulc of Virginia before suffering a 7-0 loss to Matt Gibson of Iowa State, who would go on to win the 285-pound weight class overall. Sitting at 1-1 and in the consolation bracket, Porter scored a 6-1 win over Matt Tourdot of Old Dominion before suffering his second loss of the day, dropping a 2-0 decision to Jake Elkins of Newberry College who finished fifth overall.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who competed on both Saturday and Sunday in Virginia, will now have a week off to rest and regroup, as the GWU grapplers will return to the mat for competition next Sunday, November 14, at the Mountaineer Duals hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.
