
Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing at Wofford Fall Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team participated this past weekend in the Wofford Fall Tournament, taking on competition from Western Carolina, Presbyterian College, UNC Asheville, and host Wofford.
The Runnin' Bulldogs put up impressive results throughout the two-day tournament, winning all but one singles match.
In the first round of play, Erica White defeated Izabells Glinska of Western Carolina (6-3, 6-1), Ioana Oprea defeated Paige Oekle of Presbyterian College (4-6, 6-2, 10-7), Ronia Hutterli defeated Julia Paulson of Wofford (3-6, 6-4, 11-9), Rita Gouveia defeated Layne Arnold of Western Carolina (6-1, 6-0), and Tavenner Black defeated Lucia Leahy of Presbyterian College (6-1, 6-1). Jenny Lunde fell to Karen Jiminez of Western Carolina (6-2, 6-2) in what was the lone loss for GWU for the weekend.
In the second round, White defeated UNC Asheville's Nicky Schon (6-2, 6-0), Oprea defeated Emilia Milovanovic of Wofford (7-6, 6-2), Hutterli defeated Patricia Alves of Presbyterian College (6-3, 6-0), Gouveia defeated Courtney Gardiner of Presbyterian College (6-3, 6-2), and Black defeated Chelsea Hall of UNC Asheville (6-1, 6-3).
The third round of action saw White defeat Britney Cloer of UNC Asheville (3-6, 6-4, 10-4), Oprea defeated Sarah Evans of Wofford (6-7, 6-3, 10-3), Hutterli defeated Cara Caruso of Presbyterian College (6-2, 6-0), Gouveia defeated Jackie McGuirk of UNC Asheville (default), and Black defeated Meagan Laframboise of Wofford (6-4, 6-3).
In doubles play, Lunde and Oprea defeated the duo of Oelke and Alves of PC (8-1), Gouveia and Hutterli defeated the team of Hall of UNCA and Sarnqvist of Wofford (8-1), White and Black defeated Paulson and Evans of Wofford (8-3) and Gouveia and Hutterli defeated the duo of Laframboise and Schermerhorn of Wofford (8-4).
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team will next be in action on January 22nd as they face Davidson to kick off the 2011 spring season.
