WEEK 4: WRESTLING WEEKLY MATCH NOTES
December 01, 2010 | Wrestling
SCHEDULE
The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog grapplers return to action this
weekend, as GWU will compete at the Davidson Open in Davidson, N.C.
on Saturday, December 4th.
GWU SET FOR THE DAVIDSON OPEN
GWU has had two weeks to rest, regroup and prepare for the Davidson
Open this Saturday, December 4th, in Davidson, N.C. Gardner-Webb
has had a number of grapplers compete in two open meets thus far
this season, the Hokie Open and the Citadel Open, and have not
faired well thus far, picking up only 10 wins out of 48 matches in
open tournaments this season. However, with the Runnin' Bulldogs
getting healthy, look for a handful of GWU wrestlers to have a
strong showing on Saturday afternoon.
S.O.S.! HELP IN THE UPPER WEIGHT CLASSES
GWU has struggled for wins in the upper weight classes, picking up
only 10 wins from 165 and up so far this season. Outside of Travis
Porter's five wins at 197, GWU has picked up only three wins at 165
and two wins at 174. In fact, GWU is winless at 184 and at the
heavyweight spot, where the Runnin' Bulldogs have had to forfeit in
each match. GWU freshmen Erin O'Dell and Taylor McClain have been
forced into action right out of the gates this season at 174 and
184, both out of their normal classes. GWU is hoping that
redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez will return from injury soon, to
secure more experience and depth at 174 and 184.
2010-11 HOME OPENER
Gardner-Webb not only had a strong showing in fan support at its
2010-11 home opener on November 20th versus Chattanooga, but the
Runnin' Bulldog grapplers also had a strong showing on the mat,
scoring three victories in the match. GWU picked up wins from Alex
Hamm (133), Richie Spicel (141) and Ryan Medved (149) to score nine
total points versus the Mocs, who shutout GWU last season in
Chattanooga, Tenn.
GWU GOES 2-1 AT THE MOUNTAINEER DUALS
The Runnin' Bulldogs will went 2-1 at the Mountaineer Duals,
picking up wins versus Anderson (S.C.) and Belmont Abbey. GWU
avenged an earlier season loss to the Trojans, picking up wins from
Kostern, Spicel, Ryan Medved, Alex Medved, Guthrie and Porter to
hold on to a 21-20 win. Against Belmont Abbey, GWU picked up a
huge pin fall win at 141 by freshman Luke Dutch and a tech fall
victory by Ryan Medved at 149 to score a 24-20 win over the
Crusaders. In the loss to Appalachian State, GWU's Spicel, Alex
Medved and Justin Guthrie all earned decisions in the 32-9
loss.
SLOW START TO 2010-11 SEASON
Gardner-Webb got off to a slow start to the 2010-11 season last
weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs suffered three dual match losses
and only seven wins at the 2010 Hokie Open in Salem, Va. On
Saturday, November 6, Gardner-Webb suffered a 50-0 loss to the
Virginia of the ACC and a 32-6 loss to Rider in which Alex Medved
and Travis Porter were the lone victors in the dual match. In its
match against Anderson (S.C.) GWU had a 19-16 match lead heading
into the heavyweight match, however, the Runnin' Bulldogs had to
forfeit the match and ultimately fell to Anderson (S.C.) 22-19.
LOOKING AHEAD FOR GWU
The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will return to dual match action
next Friday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host the VMI
Keydets at 7 p.m. in Boiling Springs, N.C.
