December 11, 2010 | Men's Basketball
TEMPE, Ariz. - Playing in its third time zone in five days,
Gardner-Webb dropped a 71-48 decision Saturday as Arizona State
pulled away with a 15-2 run over the final seven minutes.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-7) trailed by only 10 points, 56-46,
with 6:53 left in the game and had battled the Sun Devils (4-5)
hard in the second half after trailing 37-25 at the break.
GWU had trimmed the margin to single digits just minutes
earlier, and missed a pair of opportunities to get the margin
closer.
After Brian McNair's three-pointer with 7:14 remaining made
the score 56-46, Arizona State saw Trent Lockett and Ty Abbott
score the first nine points of a 12-0 run that pushed the lead to
22 points in a span of less than six minutes.
The two teams traded buckets in the final minute, with an ASU
trey with 11 seconds left providing the final margin.
"I thought our energy and fight was better today than in our
previous two games on this road trip," said GWU head coach Chris
Holtmann. "There were some encouraging signs for us. But give
Arizona State credit. They made jump shots and pulled away down the
stretch."
The game was Gardner-Webb's third in five days on a brutal
trip. The team returns to campus Sunday night and will break one
week for exams before traveling to face No. 24 Louisville on
December 18.
Jon Moore and Brian McNair led Gardner-Webb offensively with
11 points each, but Moore missed the game's final 16:57 after going
down with an injury.
Luke Engelken added eight points for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who
shot just 30.4 percent for the game (17-of-56).
Arizona State got 18 points from Abbott, 16 from Lockett and
15 from Rihards Kuksiks in the win. ASU shot 44.6 percent from the
floor, connected on 11-of-24 shots from long range (45.8 percent)
and turned 17 Gardner-Webb miscues into a decisive 19-2 edge in
points off of turnovers. Only seven players scored in the game for
the Sun Devils.
