December 27, 2010 | Wrestling
SCHEDULE
The Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will return to action for the first
time since December 10th this week, as Gardner-Webb will
participate in the 2010 Southern Scuffle hosted by UNC Greensboro
in Greensboro, N.C. on December 29-30th.
GWU SET FOR THE SOUTHERN SCUFFLE
GWU will look to have a number of individuals make a strong showing
at the 2010 Southern Scuffle, with the chance for a number of young
grapplers to fight their way into the GWU lineup heading into the
new year.
GWU VS VMI: DOWN TO THE WIRE ONCE AGAIN
Gardner-Webb pushed the Keydets of VMI to the final match once
again this season, as the VMI Keydets escaped with a 22-15 win,
once again due to the help of a GWU forfeit at the heavyweight
spot. After falling behind 9-0 to the Keydets in the first three
bouts, GWU got a win from Ryan Medved at 149 and a major decision
victory by Alex Medved at 157 to cut the Keydets lead to 9-7
halfway through the match. Gardner-Webb's Jonathan Velazquez picked
up a win at 184 to put the Runnin' Bulldogs into striking distance
at 16-10. Travis Porter scored a tech fall win over Chris Gill at
197 to put the score at 16-15 in favor of VMI, who then took the
six point forfeit win at 285 to pick up the 22-15 match
victory.
GWU HAS STRONG SHOWINGS AT 2010 DAVIDSON OPEN
GWU had a number of strong showings at the 2010 Davidson Open on
December 4, highlighted by redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez
winnning the championship at 184 and redshirt-sophomore Richie
Spicel being crowned the champion at 141. Both Velazquez and Spicel
went a perfect 4-0 for the day, while at 149, Ryan Medved went 3-1
and finished in second-place. Justin Guthrie went 3-1 and finished
in second at 165, while Travis Porter and Alex Medved each finished
in third-place in their respective weight classes of 197 and
157.
WELCOME BACK VELAZQUEZ
GWU redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez bounced back from injury in
a huge way at the 2010 Davidson Open, going 4-0 on the day and
winning the championship at 184. It was Velazquez's first action
of the season, having missed GWU's eight previous matches with an
injury.
LOOKING AHEAD FOR GWU
The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will return to dual meet action on
January 9th, as the GWU grapplers will compete at the IU Quad at
Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. GWU will take on
