Runnin' Bulldogs Set to Host No. 10 North Carolina on New Year's Eve at 3 p.m.
December 30, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team will welcome the No. 10 nationally ranked and undefeated North Carolina Lady Tar Heels to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a 3 p.m. tip-off in Paul Porter Arena on New Year's Eve on Friday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb is coming off a 48-point win over Tennessee Temple on December 29th and have won six out of its last seven games with the lone loss coming to Purdue by one point, 59-58, back on December 22nd.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by twin sisters Monique Hudson and Dominique Hudson, as the duo are both averaging over 13 points per game and lead the team in assists, steals and minutes played.
Gardner-Webb has posted a stellar 29-5 home record dating back to 2008-09 and are 4-1 at home this season, as the Runnin' Bulldogs welcome its first ever nationally ranked opponent to Paul Porter Arena for a women's basketball contest.
However, Friday afternoon's contest will be perhaps GWU's toughest challenge to date, as the Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 0-3 all-time versus top-25 nationally ranked teams and 0-1 against the Lady Tar Heels, will host a North Carolina team that is 12-0 on the year and is outscoring its opponents on average by over 35 points per game.
North Carolina, who is only 1-0 in true road contests this season, is coming off back-to-back double-digit wins over South Carolina and the College of Charleston. UNC is also 1-0 this season versus the Big South, having defeated Coastal Carolina 93-37 back on November 19th.
The Lady Tar Heels are led by sharpshooter Italee Lucas, who is averaging a team-high 17.9 points, and center Jessica Breland, who is averaging 13.5 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds per contest.
Last year No. 11 North Carolina defeated GWU 81-65 on December 13th in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, while children under the age of three get into the game for free.
The game will be video broadcast by the Big South Network. The video webcast can be viewed at www.bigsouthsports.com. Links to both the video webcast and live stats can also be found on the women's basketball schedule page at www.gwusports.com.
