
GWU's Velazquez and Spicel Crowned Champions at 2010 Davidson Open

Davidson, N.C. - Gardner-Webb redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez and redshirt-sophomore Richie Spicel each posted perfect records on Saturday afternoon to be crowned the 2010 Davidson Open Champions for their respective weight classes.
Velazquez posted a 4-0 record at 184, picking up a 13-2 major decision victory over Donnee Grase of Spartanburg Methodist in his first match, before defeating fellow Runnin' Bulldog grappler and teammate Blake Salyer in the championship match 5-3.
Salyer went 2-1 on the day, defeating Ike Crews of Davidson 3-1 and Tony Gardner of UNC Greensboro by way of a 14-0 major decision victory before falling in the championship bout to Velazquez at 185.
At 141, Spicel posted an undefeated day at 4-0, which included a 15-4 major decision win and a pin fall victory at 6:06 in the championship match over Vitaly Radsky of Davidson.
Fellow GWU grappler Luke Dutch also competed at 141, turning in two straight wins, including a pin fall victory at 5:17 over Jarrett Humphries of Spartanburg Methodist in his opening match, before falling to Mike Kessler of Appalachian State 5-1 in the third-place match to finish in fourth overall.
Picking up second-place finishes at the 2010 Davidson Open was Justin Guthrie at 165 and Ryan Medved at 149. Guthrie posted three straight wins before falling to Brett Miller of UNC Greensboro 6-0 in the championship match at 165. Ryan Medved advanced to the finals of the 149 weight class in dominating fashion, using a 10-2 major decision win and a 1:16 pin fall victory to move on to the semifinals match where he scored a 6-1 decision over Roman Perryman of Virginia Tech to secure a place in the championship bout. In the championship match, Ryan Medved ran out of gas, as he fell to Desi Green of Buffalo 16-5 to finish in second-place.
Gardner-Webb sophomore Morgan McDaniel started off with two straight wins, an 11-2 major decision win over Dalton Davidson of Virginia Tech and a pin fall victory at 4:39 over David Hardy of Spartanburg Methodist, before suffering back-to-back losses to end his day.
Redshirt-sophomore Travis Porter bounced back from a second round loss to win four straight bouts, including two by way of pin falls, to finish third-place overall at 197 with a 5-3 win over Keyshone Flores of Spartanburg Methodist.
Like Porter, Alex Medved picked up a third-place finish at 157, also securing two wins by way of pin fall victories, including a pin fall win at 3:40 over Jared Presley of Chattanooga in the third-place bout.
GWU redshirt-senior Michael Slaughter finished in fourth-place overall with a 2-1 record at 133, which included a pin fall win at 2:20 over Jameson Burroughs of Spartanburg Methodist, while freshman Alex Hamm went 2-2 on the day at 133, ultimately falling to Angel Garcia of UNC Greensboro who defeated Slaughter in the third-place match.
Freshman Matt Beebe posted a 16-1 technical fall win over Loren Phillips of Belmont Abbey in his first match of the day, before dropping back-to-back bouts to finish the day 1-2.
Like, Beebe, fellow freshman Taylor McClain posted a 1-2 record at 184 for the day, picking up an 8-4 win over Taylor Dorsett of Anderson before falling to the eventual third-place finisher John Sturrock of UNC Pembroke by pin fall at 2:12 in the first period.
At 125, sophomore Brett Kostern went 2-2 for the day, scoring a 17-0 technical fall win over Josh Tegard of Saint Andrews and an 11-3 major decision win over fellow teammate Robbie Golde, who also went 2-2 which included a 19-2 technical fall win over GWU teammate Jake Reinemund.
Also competing at 125 was freshmen Jacob Tutterrow and Reinemund who both went 0-2 on the day.
Freshman Matt Beebe posted a 2-2 mark at 157, which included a 16-1 tech fall win over Peter Crawford of Liberty in his first match of the day.
Gardner-Webb (2-5) will return to dual match action next Friday night, as the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will host the VMI Keydets at 7 p.m. in Boiling Springs, N.C.
