SCHEDULE
The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will host the VMI
Keydets on Friday night, December 10th, at 7 p.m. in Bost Gymnasium
in dual match action.
GWU VS VMI PREVIEW
Gardner-Webb is 0-1 at home thus far this season and 2-5 overall in
dual matches on the year, while VMI is just 1-0 in dual matches
with a 24-13 win over Franklin & Marshall last weekend. Last
year, GWU picked up wins at 125, 133, 149, 157 and 184 to find
themselves in a tie at 15-15 with the Keydets heading into the
285-pound match. However, GWU had to forfeit that final match and
thus gave the Keydets the 21-15 dual match win. Last year, Spicel
picked up a 9-5 win at 133, while Ryan Medved secured a 6-4 win at
149. Alex Medved won 11-8 at 157, while Velazquez picked up a 9-3
decision at 184.
GWU HAS STRONG SHOWING AT 2010 DAVIDSON OPEN
GWU had a number of strong showings at the 2010 Davidson Open on
December 4, highlighted by redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez
winnning the championship at 184 and redshirt-sophomore Richie
Spicel being crowned the champion at 141. Both Velazquez and Spicel
went a perfect 4-0 for the day, while at 149, Ryan Medved went 3-1
and finished in second-place. Justin Guthrie went 3-1 and finished
in second at 165, while Travis Porter and Alex Medved each finished
in third-place in their respective weight classes of 197 and
157.
WELCOME BACK VELAZQUEZ
GWU redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez bounced back from injury in
a huge way at the 2010 Davidson Open, going 4-0 on the day and
winning the championship at 184. It was Velazquez's first action
of the season, having missed GWU's eight previous matches with an
injury.
2010-11 HOME OPENER
Gardner-Webb not only had a strong showing in fan support at its
2010-11 home opener on November 20th versus Chattanooga, but the
Runnin' Bulldog grapplers also had a strong showing on the mat,
scoring three victories in the match. GWU picked up wins from Alex
Hamm (133), Richie Spicel (141) and Ryan Medved (149) to score nine
total points versus the Mocs, who shutout GWU last season in
Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will wrap up its 2010 calander
year at the 2010 Southern Scuffle on December 29-30 in Greensboro,
N.C.
