GWU Men Continue Road Swing Thursday Night At Oklahoma
December 09, 2010 | Men's Basketball
NORMAN, Okla. - Gardner-Webb will take on the Oklahoma Sooners Thursday night at 8:00 pm EST in the second of a tough, three-game road trip that will see the 'Dogs play in three different time zones in five days.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-5) flew to the Sooner State Wednesday morning after suffering a surprising, 90-82, setback at Elon on Tuesday. Gardner-Webb ran into a hot-shooting Phoenix squad that put up more points than any other team this season against the defensive-minded 'Dogs.
GWU did get its offensive in synch, however, shooting 61.4 percent, scoring a season-high 82 points and putting four men in double digits - but will face a difficult task to get back on track against the Sooners (3-5). Head coach Chris Holtmann's youthful bunch - which regularly has two newcomers in the starting lineup - still ranks among the Big South's top defensive teams, limiting opponents to less than 41 percent from the floor on the season.
Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel has a young squad himself in 2010-2011, but has a true scoring threat in senior wing Cade Davis - a three-point marksman who leads the team with 14.8 points per game. Davis missed the Sooners' last game against Gardner-Webb - an 80-76 win by the 12th-ranked Sooners on Nov. 22, 2008 in Norman - with an injury.
The Sooners are riding a five-game losing streak with losses to Kentucky, Virginia, Chaminade, Arkansas and Arizona all coming away from the Lloyd Noble Center.
Thursday's game will be televised by the Sooner Sports Network (Bob Carpenter, Billy Tubbs), and will be available as part of ESPN's Full Court pay-per-view package. WGWG-FM (88.3) and wgwg.org will also carry audio of Thursday's game live.
