Bulldogs Shine at Appalachian Mountaineer Open

Boone, N.C. - Gardner-Webb had a number of strong individual performances at the Appalachian Mountaineer Open on Thursday, February 18, as the both the women's and men's combined for 15 top-five finishes over the one-day event.
On the women's side, Gardner-Webb claimed 18 top-10 finishes
highlighted by 10 top-five finishes for the one-day event.
In the long jump event, Katy Milton finished tied for fourth with a
height of 4.86 meters (15-11.50), while junior Aliegha Brigham
finished fourth in the 55 meter dash with a personal best time of
7.45 in the finals race.
Senior Abby Callahan crossed the finish line in fourth-place in the
1000 meter run with a time of 3:15.64, while fellow classmate Brie
Thompson placed fifth in the weight throw event with a personal
best toss of 12.62 meters (41-05.00).
Gardner-Webb dominated the 600 meter dash event, as freshman Ivana Hughes, sophomore Cherish Richardson and freshman Leah Steinke finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Hughes led the charge with a time of 1:42.92. Richardson crossed the finish line behind Hughes with a time of 1:44.04, while Steinke was right on her heels with a time of 1:45.67.
Hughes also finished second-place overall in the 400 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a personal best time of 57.63.
In the 200 meter dash, it was freshman Bethany Wright who led a
trio of Lady Bulldogs to sixth, seventh and eighth-place finishes,
as Wright took sixth with her season best time of 27.76. Hughes
finished seventh with her season best time of 27.81, while Steinke
was eighth with her time of 28.56, also a season best for the
event.
GWU's Steinke also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 400 meter
dash with a time of 1:01.96, while Richardson had a seventh-place
finish in the 400 meter dash (1:02.75) and 10th in the 200 meter
dash (28.85).
In the field events, GWU placed three Lady Bulldogs in the top-10
in the pole vault event, as Carrie Long placed fourth with a height
of 3.52 meters (11-06.50) just ahead of freshman Taylor Cook who
finished fifth with a height of 3.22 meters (10-06.75). Long's
height is the heighest mark this season in the Big South
Conference.
Sophomore Brooke Yeakley took seventh in the event, clearing the bar at 3.07 meters (10-00.75).
Sophomore Sarah Herd placed fifth in the high jump event, clearing
the bar at 1.55 meters (5-01.00), while freshman Yazzming Lee took
ninth overall in the shot put with a distance of 9.93 meters
(32-07.00).
On the men's side, the Bulldogs recorded nine top-10 finishes,
including five top-five finishes.
Sophomore Mike McPherson picked up a fourth-place finish in the
shot put with a distance of 14.35 meters (47-01.00), while fellow
Bulldog Johnathan Rucker placed fifth in the high jump, clearing
the bar at 1.90 meters (6-02.75).
In the men's pole vault event, freshman Clint McManus placed sixth
with a height of 4.30 meters (14-01.25), while fellow newcomer
Steven Gardner finished in 10th-place, clearing the bar at 4.00
meters (13-01.50).
GWU freshman Josiah Stanton-Brooks took fourth-place in both the
400 meter dash, crossing the finish line at 51.90, and in the 300
meter dash with a time of 39.00, and also placed ninth in the 200
meter dash with a time of 23.92.
Redshirt-senior Charlie Steinke had two top-10 finishes, as he
finished third in the 600 meter dash with a time of 1:28.06 and
placed seventh in the 400 meter dash with his time of 52.04.
Gardner-Webb will next be in action on February 27-28, as the
Bulldogs will compete at the 2010 Big South Indoor Track and Field
Championships in Clemson, S.C.
