
GWU Men's Team in Sixth; Women's Team in Seventh After Day One of the 2010 New Balance Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships

Clemson, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's team is in sixth-place with 14 points in the team scores, while the women's team sits in seventh-place with 12 points after day one of the 2010 New Balance Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Clemson, S.C.
In the field events, junior Johnathan Rucker cleared the bar at 1.95 meters (6'4.75") in the men's high jump, placing him in fifth-place overall, while Bryce Nixon finished fifth in the men's long jump event with a season-best distance of 6.16 meters (20'2.50").
In the men's weight throw event, redshirt-sophomore Christoph Hutschalik took third-place overall with a school-record toss of 17.80 meters (58'4.75"), while fellow Bulldog Travis Rogers placed ninth with a personal best distance of 15.85 meters (52').
GWU sophomore Nick Kelly finished seventh overall in the 3000 meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 8:39.85, while the men's distance medley relay team of Charlie Steinke, Codi Merritt, Josiah Stanton-Brooks and Kelly took seventh with a finals time of 10:53.72.
Gardner-Webb's Evan Brusich sits in fifth-place in the men's heptathlon event, as the junior has recorded 2,525 points after four events.
In the 400 meter dash, senior Paul Steinke qualified for the finals on Sunday with a time of 49.18 in the preliminaries on Saturday afternoon, while in the 800 meter run, freshman Stanton-Brooks qualified for the finals with his time of 1:55.85.
Sophomore Mike McPherson set a new personal best in the men's weight throw with a distance of 14.78 meters (48'6") on Saturday afternoon, while sophomore Van Nelson (7.50) and freshman Bo Miller (7.09) each set new personal records in the 60 meter dash.
On the women's side, junior Laura Scott placed fifth overall in the 3000 meter run with a personal best time of 10:24.83, while the women's distance medley relay team of Abby Callahan, Bethany Wright, Cherish Richardson and Ariel Zimmerman crossed the finish line in seventh-place with their time of 12:46.92.
GWU's Katy Milton set a personal best distance of 5.16 meters (16'11.25") in the long jump, while fellow teammate Sarah Herd placed seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.58 meters (5'2.25").
In the women's pentathlon, senior Kayla Morgan is in fifth-place overall with a total of 2,952 points after five events, while freshman Yazzming Lee is currently in ninth with a score of 2,698.
In the 800 meter run, freshmen Ivana Hughes and Leah Steinke both qualified for the finals on Sunday, as each set a personal best time in the preliminaries on Saturday. Hughes crossed the finish line at 2:19.35, while Steinke was right on her heels with a personal best time of 2:20.14.
GWU's Richardson set a new personal best in the 800 meter run on Saturday with a time of 2:22.63, while in the 3000 meter run junior Diana Palka (10:44.01) and sophomore Elizabeth Glunk (11:34.82) each set personal best times.
The 2010 New Balance Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships will continue tomorrow, Saturday, February 28 at 1:00 p.m. The Big South Conference will have live stats on its website, BigSouthSports.com, while fans can also watch the event live on the Big South Network.
