Chelcia Petersen Places Fourth, Leads Lady Bulldogs to Fifth-Place Finish at Winthrop Intercollegiate

Rock Hill, S.C. - Gardner-Webb's Chelcia Petersen finished in a three-way tie for fourth-place overall, as the freshman paced the Lady Bulldogs to a fifth-place finish at the Winthrop Intercollegiate which was played at Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C.
Gardner-Webb carded rounds of 322, 325 and 317 to finish the two-day event with a combined team score of 964, three strokes behind the fourth-place team of Princeton University.
GWU's Petersen carded a Lady Bulldog low round of 73, +1, on Tuesday afternoon to finish tied for fourth-place overall with a three-round combined score of 235, +19.
Petersen was one of five freshmen that made up the tournament squad for head coach Tee Burton, as Hannah Hellyer, Brianna Clemmons, Lauren Smith and Meghan Allum all competed for GWU.
Hellyer carded rounds of 83, 79 and 79 to finish the two-day event tied for 14th overall with a combined score of 241, +25, while Clemmons finished tied for 20th-place with a combined three-round score of 244, +28.
GWU's Smith and Allum rounded out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs, as Smith shot a combined score of 246, +30, to place in a tie for 25th-place overall, while Allum turned in a 256, +40, to finish tied for 43rd.
Xavier University and Belmont Abbey College both tied with 949 after Xavier fired a three-round best 308, overcoming a nine stroke deficit to force a playoff. Both teams were tied after all five golfers from each team played 18 and they did it again. This time Xavier's Audrey Fellmeth drained an eight-foot putt to win the playoff.
The scoring average for the three rounds, which were skewed by wet conditions, was 84.92 with Tuesday's final round playing the easiest at 84.01.
Gardner-Webb will return to competition on Thursday, March 25, as the Lady Bulldogs will team up with the men's team to take on the Appalachian State men's and women's golf teams at the University Cup in Morganton, N.C.
