Gardner-Webb Falls To #1 Virginia, 9-2, in Men's Tennis Action Sunday Afternoon

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Sunday afternoon, the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team took on the University of Virginia, who is ranked #1 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Bulldogs put up a valiant effort, yet the Cavaliers were able to pull off the 9-2 victory.
Alternative scoring was used for this match, with four doubles and seven singles matches taking place, with each match being worth one point for a total of eleven points.
Action began with doubles play, where the Bulldogs were able to earn a victory, with the team of Matthew Herrock and Adam Knuttson-Sundblad defeating Julien Uriguen and Milo Johnson (8-6) at the No. 4 position, yet Virginia took the other three matches to take an early advantage.
In singles play, at the No. 1 position, Evgeny Slesarev defeated Philippe Oudshoorn in straight sets, at 6-3, 6-3. This was a huge victory for the senior from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, as Oudshoorn is ranked #102 in the ITA's Men's National Singles rankings. This match was also the twelfth consecutive singles victory for Slesarev, improving his season singles record to 12-2.
The Bulldogs fought hard in the remaining singles matches, yet the Cavaliers were able to take each of them to seal the overall victory. At the No. 2 position, Andrew Veeder fought hard, but fell to #113 Steven Rooda (6-1, 7-5). Matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions went into the third set, yet Santiago Villegas got past Roman Piftor (6-0, 5-7, 6-3) and Julen Uriguen was able to defeat Rafael Altmayer (5-7, 6-1, 6-0).
Gardner-Webb will have a few days to rest before returning to action Wednesday afternoon as they host Charlotte. The match is currently scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM at the Webb Tennis Complex.
