
Gardner-Webb Posts 23 Top-10 Finishes at Asics/Winthrop Invitational

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's and men's track and field teams combined to post 23 top-10 finishes this weekend at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Gardner-Webb women's team posted 13 top-10 finishes over the two-day event, highlighted by junior Laura Scott, who took first-place in the 1500 meter run development event, crossing the finish line in a new personal best time of 5:00.04.
The 4x400 meter relay unit of Kayla Morgan, Cherish Richardson, Leah Steinke and Ivana Hughes took third-place overall with a time of 4:06.49.
In the 800 meter run, Gardner-Webb had three runners place in the top-10, as Hughes led the way with a fourth-place finish with her finals time of 2:20.45. Fellow freshman Ariel Zimmerman crossed the finish line with a season best time of 2:21.67, well enough for sixth-place, while Steinke took ninth with a time of 2:22.16. Richardson finished just outside of the top-10, placing 12th with a time of 2:24.20.
Gardner-Webb's Diana Palka took ninth-place overall in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:41.79, while in the women's heptathlon event, freshman Yazzming Lee finished 11th overall with a total of 3344 points.
Gardner-Webb had a handful of solid performances in the field events, as freshman Ashlei Alexander took second in the shot put with a distance of 12.26 meters (40'2.75") and seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.07 meters (141'04").
Senior Brie Thompson finished in fifth-place in the discus throw event, turning in a long throw of 37.51 meters (123'01") and sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 43.07 meters (142'03").
In the pole vault, Carrie Long placed fifth with a height of 3.20 meters (10'6"), while freshman Taylor Cook and Brooke Yeakley finished ninth and tenth, respectively with heights of 3.05 meters (10') and 2.90 meters (9'6.25").
Freshman Bethany Wright placed 13th overall in the hammer throw event with a distance of 31.44 meters (103'02"), while sophomore Caroline Arledge took 11th in the javelin throw with a toss of 27.37 meters (89'09").
Sophomore Ellie Glunk set a new personal best time of 20:22.32 in the 5000 meter run.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs picked up 10 top-10 finishes along the way highlighted by the 4x400 relay team of Paul Steinke, Johnathon Rucker, Josiah Stanton-Brooks and Evan Brusich taking second with a time of 3:19.10.
Sophomore Nick Kelly took second-place overall in the 1500 meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 3:59.09, a new personal best, while newcomer Bo Miller picked up a fourth-place finish with a season best time of 10.82 in the finals of the 100 meter dash on Saturday afternoon.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Rucker set a new personal best time of 14.60 in the preliminaries on Friday to secure him a place in the finals on Saturday, in which he crossed the finish line in fifth-place with a finals time of 14.79. Brusich placed ninth overall in the 110 meter hurdles with a preliminaries time of 15.47.
In the 800 meter run, redshirt-senior Charlie Steinke finished eighth overall with his time of 1:57.76, while in the men's pole vault event freshman Clint McManus took sixth, clearing the bar at 4.40 meters (14'5.25"), a season best height.
Gardner-Webb's Christoph Hutschalik took fourth-place overall in the men's hammer throw, turning in a distance of 55.64 meters (182'06"), while sophomore Travis Rogers placed in a tie for seventh overall in the men's shot put with a throw of 13.65 meters (44'9.50") and ninth in the hammer throw with a distance of 43.51 meters (142'09").
Freshman Chase Fuller had a season best time of 11.53 in the 100 meter dash preliminaries, while Miller had a season best time of 22.52 in the 200 meter dash preliminaries.
Senior Paul Steinke had a personal best time of 22.34 in the 200 meter dash preliminaries, finishing in 12th-place overall, while Justin Cole finished 13th overall with a time of 2:13.37 in the 800 meter run development event.
Freshman Colby Witt took 13th in the 5000 meter run with a season best time of 16:03.81, while Stanton-Brooks placed 16th overall in the 1500 meter run with his time of 4:13.71.
Gardner-Webb will return to action next weekend, as the Bulldogs will have a number of individuals compete in either the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas or at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. on April 2-3.
