
Porter Wins Fourth Straight East Regional Championship; Bulldogs Take Second at 2010 NCAA East Regionals

Millersville, Pa. - Gardner-Webb redshirt-senior Dustin Porter made Bulldog history on Saturday night, as the Bulldogs finished second overall as a team at the 2010 NCAA East Regionals with a score of 74.50.
Gardner-Webb, which had one champion, two runner ups and five third-place finishes, placed behind Liberty in the team scores, as the Flames scored a total of 110.50 points over the regional meet.
GWU heavyweight Dustin Porter advanced to the championship bout of the heavyweight division, as he picked up a pin fall at 2:07 over Charles Godfrey of Millersville in his first match of the day. Porter made history in the next match, defeating Joshua Pelletier of Liberty 5-2 in the championship match to claim his fourth straight East Regional Championship.
At 125, junior Michael Slaughter picked up a decisive 15-5 major decision win over Duquesne's Cory Kiser in his first bout of the day, advancing to the championship bout with the win. However, in the championship match, Slaughter fell to Jonathan Childress of Liberty 11-6, placing second-place in the lowest weight class.
GWU redshirt-freshman Ryan Medved suffered a tough 3-2 loss in the first round, yet bounced back in his first match in the consolation bracket to pick up a 12-2 major decision win over Billy Heemer of Campbell to advance to the bout for third-place overall. In the finals of the consolation bracket, Medved defeated Josh Pascazi of Duquesne 8-3 for third-place overall.
Like his twin brother, Alex Medved lost in the first round by a single point, an 8-7 loss to Shaun Smith of Liberty, yet picked up a forfeit win in the consolation bracket to advance to the match for third-place overall. There he picked up a 2:15 pin fall win over Jake Fose of Campbell to place third at 157.
At 165, David Pelsang was handed a 4-3 loss to Chris Mazzatta of Campbell in the first round, yet advanced in the consolation bracket by way of a bye and a forfeit. The redshirt-senior then avenged her earlier loss to Mazzatta by pinning him at 6:26 to take third-place.
Gardner-Webb's Blake Salyer defeated John Merickel of Campbell 4-1 in his first bout at 174, yet fell in his next bout to Shane Smith of Millersville by way of a pin fall to fall into the consolation bracket. Salyer then defeated Seth Csaszar of Duquesne by way of a pin fall at 4:29 to finish third overall in his weight class.
At 184, redshirt-junior Jonathan Velazquez advanced by way of a 6:05 pin fall victory over Ryan Sula of Duquesne to advance to the championship bout. In the championship round, Velazquez fell to Nick Knowles of Liberty 5-3 in sudden victory to finish in second-place overall.
Redshirt-freshman Travis Porter suffered a 7-4 loss against Peter Burns of Campbell in the first round, yet bounced back to advance to the third-place bout where he then defeated Brandon Johnson of Liberty for third-place overall.
For the fourth straight year, Porter will head to the NCAA National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska on March 18-20.
