
Bulldogs Get Past UNC Asheville, 4-3, In Men's Tennis Action Thursday Afternoon

ASHEVILLE, NC - The Gardner-Webb men's team earned an important Big South Conference win Thursday afternoon, defeating UNC Asheville by a 4-3 score at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center.
Action began in doubles play, where the duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer defeated UNCA's Jonas Brobeck and Matt Waissen (8-2) at the No. 1 position, yet GWU dropped the two remaining matches to give UNC Asheville the doubles point.
In singles play, Gardner-Webb tied the match when Slesarev defeated Nicola Nonnenbroich (7-6, 6-0) at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, Andrew Veeder fell to Waissen (6-3, 6-4). Altmayer then defeated Adrien Langeard (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 3 position to tie the match once again at 2-2.
GWU took a 3-2 advantage when Jeremie Tardif defeated Nathan White (6-3, 2-6, 6-1) at the No. 5 position, but UNCA tied the match once again when Thomas Rees defeated Adam Knutsson-Sundblad (6-3, 7-6) at the No. 6 position.
The deciding match was at the No. 4 position, where Roman Piftor came from behind to defeat Brobeck (3-6, 7-6, 7-5) to give Gardner-Webb the deciding point to take the 4-3 overall victory.
Gardner-Webb will wrap up the 2010 regular season Sunday afternoon as they travel to take on conference foe Liberty. The match is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
