Gardner-Webb Has Strong Showings on Day One of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Charleston, S.C. - Gardner-Webb had a handful of strong showings on Thursday, day one of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as a number of student-athletes set personal marks in their respective events.
In the women's hammer throw event, Gardner-Webb senior Brie Thompson finished fifth overall with a personal best distance of 49.01 meters (160'9"), a mere 0.16 meters short of the Lady Bulldog record of 49.17 meters (161'4") set by Elizabeth Maxwell in 2008.
Freshman Ashlei Alexander also turned in a personal best mark of 45.32 meters (148'8") in the women's hammer throw event on Thursday afternoon, putting her in seventh-place overall, while fellow newcomer Bethany Wright placed 16th-place overall with a throw of 30.67 meters (100'7"), also a personal best mark.
Also in the women's field events on day one of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, sophomore Caroline Arledge picked up a fifth-place finish in the women's javelin throw event with a distance of 38.06 meters (124'10"), a new personal best.
GWU junior Laura Scott picked up a ninth-place finish in the women's 10000 meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 39:10.79, a personal best, while fellow classmate Lia Hudak placed 16th overall with a personal best time of 45:01.39.
Freshman Yazzming Lee sits in 10th-place with 2,167 points in the women's heptathlon after four events on day one, as Lee picked up a second-place finish in the women's shot put heptathlon event with a toss of 10.91 meters (35'9.50").
On the men's side on day one of the conference championships, redshirt-sophomore Christoph Hutschalik took fourth-place with a throw of 57.23 meters (187'9") in the men's hammer throw event.
Gardner-Webb's C.J. Wise and Josh Padgett both competed in the men's javelin event on Thursday, as Wise took 14th-place with his distance of 42.76 meters (140'3"), while Padgett finished 15th overall with a throw of 37.84 meters (124'2").
Junior Evan Brusich, who set the GWU Outdoor Track and Field record in the men's decathlon with 6,538 points last year, finishes day one of the decathlon, which included five events, in fifth-place with a total of 3,307 points. Brusich finished third in the 400 meter dash decathlon event with his time of 50.32 and finished fifth in the 100 meter dash (11.35), in the long jump (6.10 meters/20'0.25") and in the shot put with a personal best mark (10.74 meters/35'3").
In the team standings, Gardner-Webb is in sixth-place in the women's rankings with 12 points, on point behind Winthrop who is in fifth and 31 points behind the leader Coastal Carolina with 43 points.
In the men's team rankings, Gardner-Webb is tied for eighth with UNC Asheville with five points, 40 points behind Liberty who is in first-place with 45 points.
Day two of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships will start at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning, Friday, April 16, at the Bagwell-Settle Track hosted by Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C.
