
Evgeny Slesarev Named Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE, NC - Gardner-Webb senior Evgeny Slesarev was named the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year, as announced Wednesday evening at an awards ceremony held on the campus of Radford University prior to the beginning of the 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday.
Slesarev, a No. 1 player from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, notched an 18-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Conference play on the year. He was tabbed the Big South's Player of the Week on three occasions and highlighted his season with wins over two ranked opponents. One of his biggest wins on the year came against then 80th-ranked Ivan Salec of Radford.
The honor marks Gardner-Webb's first-ever men's tennis Player of the Year nod as Slesarev secured four top-votes and 10 points in the voting.
Slesarev also earned a flight championship for the No. 1 position at singles with his league-leading 18-3 mark at the position, as well as receiving All-Conference honors for singles and doubles with senior Rafael Altmayer.
Altmayer was also named to the All-Academic team.

The 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Championship kicks off at 10:00 AM Thursday morning, as the fifth seeded Bulldogs take on No. 4 Liberty. The tournament, which is hosted by Radford University, will last through Saturday, April 24th, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
