'Dogs Sign Three-Time All-State Third Baseman Scott Coleman

BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb University baseball announced
today that Wilmington Hoggard (N.C.) High third baseman Scott
Coleman had signed to play for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Coleman (6-1, 200) was a three-year star with the Vikings,
earning All-State honors in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and posting stellar
career numbers for one of the state's top high school teams.
This past season, he batted .521 with 38 hits, eight doubles,
four home runs and 29 RBI to lead Hoggard to a 21-3 record and a
No. 4 state ranking overall. He was a first-team All-Area selection
by the Wilmington Star-News for the third season in a row and
earned second-team All-State honors (all classifications) from
NCPiedmontSports.com in June.
Coleman struck out just twice in 73 at bats as a senior,
cementing his reputation as of the top hitters in North
Carolina.
The young slugger was a first-team Class 4A Coaches'
Association All-State choice in 2009 as a junior, batting a
career-high .564 with eight doubles, nine home runs and 32 RBI. His
1.013 slugging percentage and .635 on base percentage were among
the best in the state that season.
In 2008, the Wilmington Star-News named Coleman its Area
Player of the Year after his sophomore season, when he batted a
robust .477 with 41 hits in 86 at bats with six home runs and 33
RBI. He also earned Class 4A All-State honors from the N.C. High
School Coaches' Association.
For his career, Coleman collected 123 hits and batted .518
with 18 home runs and 94 RBI in just 76 games. He struck out only
five times in his final 151 career at bats on the high school
level.
The right-handed hitting Coleman fills an immediate need at
the plate for Gardner-Webb, as the Diamond 'Dogs graduated three of
its top hitters from that side of the plate in Kurt Fulginiti, Ty
Boyles and O.J. McFarland (18 combined home runs and 116 RBI in
2010).
He joins a strong incoming class that includes: Virginia Beach
(Va.) Greenbrier Christian Academy catcher Adam
Tiller (All-State, VISAA State Player of the Year); Forest
(Va.) Jefferson Forest High pitcher Erik
Heiligenstadt (All-State, Area Player of the Year); High
Point Christian (N.C.) Academy pitcher Andrew
Barnett (two-time All-State); Oxford Webb (N.C.) High
outfielder Ryan Allen (N.C. Top 50 prospect) and
West Forsyth (Ga.) High catcher Chris Rubessa
(2010 All-County).
Gardner-Webb signee Brandon Henderson, a 15th-round selection
in last month's Major League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays,
recently signed a professional contract with the club and will
begin his pro career with the Gulf Coast (Fla.) Rays shortly.
Henderson was the Class 2A State Player of the Year in South
Carolina, helping lead Gardner-Webb alum Coach Dean Jones to a
state title in his final year at the helm of Chesnee High.
