September 01, 2010 | Women's Soccer
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Freshman Meagan Reynolds scored her first collegiate goal in the 107th minute of play to give Gardner-Webb the 1-0 victory over USC Upstate in women's soccer action Tuesday evening.
Reynolds, a native of nearby Kings Mountain, N.C., was able to put a shot past Spartan freshman goalkeeper Rachel Collins as she was charging toward the ball to earn the lone goal of the match, and the first goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs in nearly 300 minutes of play. Junior forward Dawn Rollyson was credited with the assist.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-0-1) outplayed the Spartans (0-4-0) in nearly every category, taking 26 total shots, with 11 being on goal. Upstate was able to put up six shots, with three being on goal, yet the GWU defense was too much for the Spartans to overcome.
Gardner-Webb was on the offensive attack early in the first half, with shots being put on goal by Rollyson, redshirt sophomore midfielder Sonja Kienzler, and sophomore midfielder Taylor Napoli within the first 20 minutes of play, yet none were able to get by Upstate's Collins.
Throughout the first half, the Runnin' Bulldogs took a total of 13 shots, with five being on goal, yet none were able to find of the back of the net. GWU's defense totally shut out the offense of the Spartans (0-4-0) in the first half of play, not allowing the team to take a single shot to keep the match scoreless at the half.
The second half of play began much like that of the first, with Gardner-Webb attacking offensively early. Junior forward Megan Reimer put a shot on goal in the 53rd minute of play, yet was unable to put the ball past Collins. Rollyson put two more shots on goal for the 'Dogs in the 86th and 88th minutes of play, but was unable to score on either.
The Spartans were able to find some offense in the second half, with freshman midfielder Danielle White putting a shot on goal in the 73rd minute. Freshman defender Jessica Jackyra put two shots on goal in the 83rd and 85th minutes of the match, but none were able to get past GWU junior goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne, the reigning Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, to keep the match scoreless, sending the 'Dogs into its second consecutive overtime match.
Both overtime periods were fairly even in play until Gardner-Webb began to attack the goal at the 105 minute mark as Napoli put another shot on goal that was prevented from finding the back of the net. Reynolds put a shot on goal that was saved by Collins in the 106th minute, before scoring the golden goal during the next minute.
