BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Morehead State scored two goals early in the second half to defeat Gardner-Webb by a 2-0 score Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Under Armour Border Classic.
The two goals scored by the Eagles gives Morehead State (2-5-0) the Border Classic title due to goal differential. All participating teams went 1-1 during the weekend, with the other three teams only scoring one goal each.
The first half of action was evenly paced, as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne had two saves during the half for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb (3-3-1) swiched goalkeepers to begin the second half, placing freshman Erika Lenns in goal, and she was tested by the Eagle offense immediately. In the 47th minute of play, sophomore midfielder Sam Toepfer chipped in a shot from 12 yards out to give the Eagles the lead, and in the 50th minute, junior midfielder Sarah Phillip took a free kick that was headed into the goal by senior forward Erin Adams.
GWU attacked offensively throughout the second half, putting five shots on goal, yet each were stopped by senior goalkeeper Lily Meisner. Senior midfielder Mellisa Batttista and junior forward Stephanie Benshoof each led the team offensively with two shots on goal apiece.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will next be in action Friday evening as they travel to Boone, N.C. to take on Appalachian State. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
