
Men's Tennis Participates in UNCG Fall Invitational This Past Weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four members of the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team participated this past weekend in the 2010 UNC Greensboro Invitational, taking on opponents from schools across the southeast.
Ural Ates, John Devose, Roman Piftor, and Andrew Carter each participated in a singles and doubles matches throughout the weekend.
In the A1 singles flight, Ates fell to Roberto Vieira of Chattanooga, the No. 3 seed in the main draw, 6-3, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, he defeated Simon Janik of Kennesaw State(6-1, 6-0) before falling to Gianni Kubin of Kennesaw State (2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7)).
Devose participated in the A2 singles flight, and won his first match in the main draw, defeating Joshua Cook of The Citadel (7-5, 6-0). In the quarterfinals, Devose fell to the fourth seeded Yaroslav Litus of UNC Greensboro (6-2, 6-3). In the consolation rounds, Devose defeated Carlos Arboleda of Elon(1-6, 7-6(4), 1-0 (5)) and Nicholi Nonnebroich of UNC Asheville.
In the A3 singles flight, Piftor advanced to the semifinals in the main draw, defeating Ryan Bouttelll of Kennesaw State(3-6, 6-4, 6-4), and No. 1 seed Felipe Lima of Belmont (injury withdrawal) before falling to Ahmet Sarioglu of UNC Greensboro (6-1, 6-3) and Ryan Spencer of Kennesaw State in the third place match.
Carter represented the Runnin' Bulldogs in the A4 singles flight, falling in the opening round in the main draw to No. 4 seed Nathan White of UNC Asheville, 6-4, 6-0. In the consolation rounds, Carter defeated Andrew Clark of UNC Greensboro (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (0)), Jimmy Rouche of UNC Greensboro (7-6(2), 7-6(7)), and No. 2 seed Johnny Murrell of Belmont (injury withdrawal) and John Taylor of Tennessee Tech.
In the doubles A flight, Carter and Devose teamed up to defeat Dillion Berkabile and Joshua Cook of The Citadel (9-8(3)), before falling to Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright of UNC Greensboro (8-4) in the main draw. In the consolation round, the duo defeated Michael Langel and Tyler Mills of Kennesaw State (8-4).
In the doubles B flight, Ates and Piftor teamed up to defeat the duos of Jimmy Rouche and Ahmet Sarioglu of UNC Greensboro(8-5) and the No. 3 seed team of Josh Girling and Arturo Santo Ruize of Tennessee Tech (injury withdrawal) before falling to the team of No. 2 seed Nicolai Nonnebroich and Nathan White of UNC Asheville (8-5) in the semifinals of the main draw.
The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team will next be in action this weekend as they travel to Asheville, N.C. to participate in the UNC Asheville Fall Tournament.
