'Dogs Finish On High Note In Summer League Action

BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb's baseball success extended onto the summer fields of collegiate wooden bat leagues in 2010, as several Runnin' Bulldogs enjoyed all-star seasons around the nation.
Outfielder Adam McFarland earned all-star honors in the New York Collegiate Baseball League for the Hornell Dodgers, batting .306 with 56 hits, 10 doubles, five triples, one home run and 24 RBI. The Shelby, N.C., native also swiped three bags for the Dodgers - which has been a successful home to several GWU players in recent seasons.
The trio of Benji Jackson, Jeff Howell and Michael Hanzlik each played in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League in 2010, and all earned spots in the SCBL All-Star Game - with Jackson and Howell teaming up with the Carolina Stingers in Fort Mill, S.C., and Hanzlik pitching for the Carolina Chaos.
Jackson built on his red-hot finish to the 2010 Gardner-Webb season, batting .306 with nine doubles, 37 hits, one triple, two home runs and 23 RBI. He also stole seven bases in eight attempts.
Howell posted a 3-2 mark with a 4.53 ERA, 49.2 innings pitched and 29 strikeouts with just one walk. The former Kings Mountain (N.C.) High star held batters to a .261 average.
Hanzlik was one of the circuits most consistent starters, forging a 3-2 record and 2.89 ERA in 37.1 innings pitched. The 6-foot-4 righty fanned 31 batters, walked just six and saw opposing hitters bat just .236 against him.
Two Gardner-Webb players were major cogs in the Forest City Owls run to the 2010 championship in the Coastal Plains League as well. The Owls finished with a 37-19 overall mark - with 19 wins at McNair Field and 18 on the road.
Lefty Brett Stackhouse fanned 33 batters in 32.2 innings for the Owls, working mainly out of the bullpen throughout the summer. Stackhouse held opposing batters to a frigid .220 average as well.
Former Crest (N.C.) High standout Dusty Quattlebaum, who is expected provide plenty of pop to the Gardner-Webb lineup this season, showed why with the Owls - belting seven home runs to lead the team.
