
GWU Women's Golf Opens Up Fall Season With a Fifth-Place Finish at Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate

Waynesville, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team finished tied for fifth-place overall this weekend at the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina University at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa in Waynesville, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs bounced back from a first round team score of 303 on Saturday to shoot a combined team score of 288 on Sunday afternoon giving them a combined team score of 591, +15, to place them in a tie with Middle Tennessee State at fifth-place.
Sophomore Meghan Allum paced GWU, as she turned in a low round 70, -2, on Sunday afternoon to finish the two-day event with a combined score of 145, +1, placing her in a tie at 12th-place overall. Allum was one of the top golfers on the par 4 holes, turning in an even, 4.00, par 4 scoring average for the tournament.
Newcomer Sammy Vass finished in a tie for 20th-place overall, as she carded rounds of 75 and 72 to finish with a 147, +3, for the two-round event.
Fellow sophomore Lauren Smith, who had two eagles on the weekend and posted a tournament low par 5 scoring average of 6 under at 4.40, finished with a score of 148, +4, to place in a tie at 25th-place overall.
Rounding out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs was senior Courtney Meyer, who posted a team-high 25 pars en route to a combined two-day score of 151, +7, and sophomore Chelcia Petersen, who led GWU with a part 3 scoring average of 2.80 and also posted a combined two round score of 151, +7.
As a team, Gardner-Webb led the tournament field with a par 4 scoring average of 4.16, +3, overall, and was tied for the tournament lead in eagles with two.
Gardner-Webb finished 13 strokes out of first-place and only three strokes behind the third-place finishers of Western Carolina and Elon who each turned in team scores of 588, +12.
Jacksonville State won the tournament with a combined team score of 578, +2, over the two-day event, finishing eight strokes ahead of the second-place team, Radford, who turned in a team score of 586, +10.
The GWU women's golf team will return to the links next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will tee off at the UNC Greensboro Starmount Women's Intercollegiate on Sunday, September 26. The tournament will go through Tuesday, September 28.
