SCHEDULE
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be on the road this week for not one but two contests. GWU will take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, September 21, at 7 p.m. and will then kick off its 2010 Big South Conference slate on Saturday night against the High Point Panthers at 7 p.m. in High Point, N.C.
MATCH NOTES VS APPALACHIAN STATE
GWU is coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Davidson, in
which the Runnin' Bulldogs took the NSCAA South Region No. 6 ranked
Wildcats to the limit. GWU will look to bounce back against the
Mountaineers of Appalachian State who is coming off a 2-1 home win
over Big South member Liberty. Appalachian State is 2-1-2 thus far
this season. However, the Mountaineers are 1-0 at home and 1-0
versus the Big South thus far this season. In fact, in its two
exhibition games, Appalachian State tied Radford 2-2 and defeated
UNCA 1-0. GWU is 0-1 versus the Southern Conference this
season.
OVERALL SERIES HISTORY VERSUS THE MOUNTAINEERS
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 1-4-0 all time versus the Mountaineers,
including defeating GWU 4-2 last season. In fact, Gardner-Webb has
lost its last three matches versus Appalachian State.
MATCH NOTES VS HIGH POINT
Gardner-Webb will kick off its 2010 Big South Conference slate
against the High Point Panthers on Saturday night. High Point, who
was picked as the preseason favorites to win the Big South this
year, is 3-2-1 thus far this season, coming off a 2-1 loss to
William & Mary on September 18. However, High Point is 2-0-1
thus far at home this season with the tie coming against the Mercer
Bears, who were defeated by GWU 3-0 earlier in the season.
OVERALL SERIES HISTORY VERSUS THE HIGH POINT
PANTHERS
GWU is winless versus the High Point Panthers, having posted a
0-4-2 record against them. The first match up came all the way
back in 1987, the Runnin' Bulldogs first year of competing in men's
soccer action. Last season, High Point ran away from the Runnin'
Bulldogs, scoring a 5-0 win in Boiling Srpings, N.C.
BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAY SET TO BEGIN
GWU will kick off its 2010 Big South Conference slate this Saturday
night with a 7 p.m. showdown at High Point University. The High
Point Panthers were picked to finish first in this season's Big
South Preseason Conference Men's Soccer Poll. Last year, High
Point defeated GWU 5-0 in Boiling Springs, N.C., using its speed to
take advantage of the size of the GWU defense.
ROAD TRIP
The Runnin' Bulldogs will kick off its longest road trip of the
season this week, as Coach Setzer's squad will play four straight
road contests over the next three weeks. GWU is 0-1 thus far this
season in true road contests, yet will look to pick up wins at the
home of familiar foes Appalachian State, High Point and
Clemson.
NO OVERTIME PLEASE
The Runnin' Bulldogs have played two overtime matches thus far this
season, falling in both matches 1-0. In fact, GWU's opponents each
scored in the opening two minutes of the extra frame to defeat the
Runnin' Bulldogs.
A-SUN SPLIT
GWU, the 2006 Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Tournament Champions, have
posted a 2-2 against the A-Sun this year having picked up wins at
home over Mercer and USC Upstate. The Runnin' Bulldogs two losses
versus its former conference foes came against Lipscomb and at
Belmont this season.
THE BIG SOUTH NETWORK
Gardner-Webb, as of now, will have a total of nine regular season
matches and the 2010 Big South Conference Championships streamed on
the Big South Network. The matches that will be streamed via the
Big South Network can be found at www.GWUsports.com or at
www.bigsouthsports.com.
LOOKING AHEAD
Gardner-Webb will remain on the road for its next two matches with
the bouts coming at UNC Asheville and at Clemson. GWU, who
defeated both of these teams last season, will take on UNCA at 4
p.m. on Wednesday, September 29th, in Asheville, N.C. Then the
Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Clemson, S.C. on Tuesday, October
5, to square off with the Clemson Tigers, who GWU defeated 1-0 in
Clemson a year ago. That match is slated for a 7 p.m. kick
off.
