
Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing at UNC Asheville Open Tournament

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team participated this past weekend in the UNC Asheville Open Tournament, with four Runnin' Bulldogs competing, taking home titles in both singles and doubles play.
Former GWU men's tennis member Evgeny Slesarev participated in the tourney in the flight one singles, going 4-0 to take home the fight championship. According to open tournament rules, anyone is eligible to participate, allowing the reigning Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Year to compete. In route to the flight title, he defeated Beau Willis of Brevard (6-4, 7-5), Nicolai Nonnenbroich of UNC Asheville (7-5, 6-4), Matt Waissen of UNC Asheville (6-1, 6-2), and Scott McCormick of Brevard (6-4, 6-2).
Andrew Veeder, Andrew Carter, and Julien Belair also competed for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Both Belair and Veeder advanced to the consolation championship for the first flight, with that match to be played at a later date. Carter participated in flight two, winning his match in the quarterfinals against Carlos Oyaga of Mars Hill (6-2, 7-6) before falling to Thomas Rees of UNC Asheville (6-4, 6-3) in the semifinals.
In doubles play, Slesarev and Beliar teamed to take home the open doubles title, defeating Zach High and Ryan Matthews of Mars Hill (8-3), Jonas Brobeck and Matt Waissen of UNC Asheville (8-6), and Nathan White and Nicolai Nonnenbroich of UNC Asheville. Carter and Veeder teamed as well, defeating Brad Bassinger and Guilherme Lima from Mars Hill (9-7) before losing a close 9-8 (3) match to White and Nonnenbroich from UNC Asheville in the quarterfinals.
Gardner-Webb will return to action this week as they host the GWU Fall Classic. The tournament is set to run from Friday, September 24th to Saturday, September 25th at the Webb Tennis Complex.
