WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fell to George Washington by a 1-0 score Friday afternoon after sophomore forward Adriana Moya scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute of play.
Moya bent a shot into the top right corner just out of the reach of Gardner-Webb junior goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne to propel George Washington to the win.
The Colonials (6-3-0) attacked early in the match, with freshman midfielder Alex Neal putting a shot on goal during the fourth minute of play, yet Hearne denied her from scoring. Moya, freshman forward Claire Haft, and sophomore forward Kayley Sullivan each also put one shot on goal during the first half, yet were unable to put the ball past Hearne.
Gardner-Webb (3-5-2) was able to put one shot on goal late in the first half, as sophomore midfielder Megan Frost sent a shot toward the goal during the 40th minute of action, but George Washington junior goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe came up with the save to prevent the Runnin' Bulldogs from scoring, sending both teams to the locker room scoreless at the end of the first half.
In the second half of play, the Runnin' Bulldogs attempted to score just seconds after Moya's goal, with Megan Frost putting another shot on goal, yet was unable to put it past Rowe.
The Runnin' Bulldog defense played especially well throughout the entire match, with freshman Jessica Casper filling in for senior Sarah Keyser in the back line, serving a one-match suspension due to receiving a red card during her last match, yet Gardner-Webb was unable to make the most of its scoring opportunities, being unable to find the back of the net.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on October 2nd as they begin Big South Conference play by traveling to Winthrop. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
