Blacksburg, Va. - Both the Gardner-Webb women's
and men's cross country teams competed on Saturday morning, as the
Runnin' Bulldogs took part in the 2010 Big South Preview Meet
hosted by Radford University at Blacksburg High School in
Blacksburg, Va.
The GWU women's team picked up a third-place team finish with
its 97 points, finishing behind both VMI (19) and High Point (60),
while the men's team placed eighth overall with 204 total points,
four behind the seventh-place team in the Presbyterian College Blue
Hose.
Once again the women's team was led by sophomore Ariel
Zimmerman, as she continued her strong 2010 season with a
seventh-place finish and a time of 19:37.78 in the 5k event.
Senior Laura
Scott picked up a 17th-place finish with her time of 20:18.03,
while redshirt-sophomore Elisabeth
Sawyer crossed the finish line in 20th with a time of
20:22.24.
Senior Lia
Hudak turned in a time of 21:35.68 to finish in 37th-place
overall, while redshirt-freshman Leah
Steinke, redshirt-freshman Ivana
Hughes and senior Diana
Palka all finished together to round out the GWU runners.
Steinke led the group with a time of 21:55.30 to finish in 41st,
while Hughes turned in a time of 22:10.12 to place 42nd overall,
just ahead of Palka who took 43rd with her time of 22:11.91.
On the men's side, GWU freshman Mike
McClay crossed the finish line in 30th-place overall with a
time of 28:32.31 to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs in the 8k event.
A duo of freshman in Trey
Crook and Justin
Loy finished back-to-back in 49th and 50th overall, as Crook
crossed the finish line with a time of 30:28.67, slightly in front
of Loy who had a time of 30:31.34.
Junior Jacob
Hoyle finished in 53rd-place overall with his time of 31:05.78,
while senior Justin
Cole crossed the finish line with a time of 31:36.42, placing
him in 57th overall.
Rounding out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs men's team was
freshman Jarrett
Willis, who placed 59th with his time of 32:01.18, and
redshirt-junior Patrick
Williams, who finished in 60th with a time of 32:05.04.
Gardner-Webb will return to competition next week, as the
Runnin' Bulldogs will compete in the Charlotte Cross Country
Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, October 1.
