Vass Leads GWU Women's Golf to Eleventh Place Finish at UNCG Starmount Fall Classic

Greensboro, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's Sammy Vass paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with a combined score of 150, +6, to lead GWU to an 11th-place team finish over the two-round, three-day event, at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic hosted at the Bryan Park Players Course in Greensboro, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carded a first round 318, +30, on a cloudy and rainy Sunday, and then bounced back to shoot a 307, +19, on Tuesday after having Monday's play cancelled due to rainfall, finishing the tournament in 11th-place with a combined team score of 625, +49.
Vass, a sophomore transfer from Central Florida, carded two rounds of 75, to finish tied for 14th-place overall with a combined score of 150, +6.
Sophomore Chelcia Petersen finished with a two-round combined score of 156, +12, placing in a tie at 37th-place overall, just ahead of fellow sophomore Meghan Allum who finished in a tie at 41st-place with her two-day score of 157, +13.
Rounding out the scoring for the tournament, which was plagued by inclement weather conditions all three days, was sophomores Lauren Smith and Brianna Clemmons. Smith finished in 64th-place overall with a combined score of 162, +18, while Clemmons turned in a two-day score of 170, +26, to finished in 72nd-place overall.
GWU as a team finished one stroke behind UNC Wilmington, who finished in 10th-place overall with a score of 624, +48, and one stroke ahead of the University of Miami, who finished in 12th with a team score of 626, +50.
East Carolina won the team championship on a fifth-card tiebreaker, as the Lady Pirates carded a second round low team score of 285, -3, on Tuesday, to finish the event with a combined team score of 595, +19.
North Carolina State, who tied the Lady Pirates with a score of 595, +19, took second-place overall on the fifth-card tiebreaker.
Gardner-Webb's women's golf team will return to competition this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Winthrop Intercollegiate in Rock Hill, S.C. on October 2-3.
