
GWU Women Take Third, Men Take Sixth at the Western Carolina University Open on Friday Night

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb cross country team placed
five individuals in the top-15 over both the women's and men's
events on Friday night, as the women took third-place overall and
the men' finished in sixth at the Western Carolina University Open
in Cullowhee, N.C.
The women's team totaled 60 points over the 2 mile run, finishing
behind Western Carolina and Winthrop.
GWU was led by sophomore Ariel
Zimmerman, who crossed the finish line in fourth-place overall
with her time of 12:00.50, and senior Laura
Scott, who finished in sixth-place with her time of 12:05.70.
Both Zimmerman and Scott broke the previous GWU school record for
the women's 2-mile event.
Sophomores Elisabeth
Sawyer and Elizabeth
Glunk placed 13th and 14th, respectively, as Sawyer turned in a
time of 12:33.10, just ahead of Glunk at 12:38.20.
Redshirt-freshman Ivana
Hughes crossed the finish line in 27th with a time of 13:31.90,
just head of fellow redshirt-freshman Leah
Steinke (13:33.50) and junior Cherish
Richardson (14:00.20).
On the men's side, the Runnin' Bulldogs finished in sixth-place
overall with a total of 154 points in the 5K race.
Freshman Michael McClay paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with a time of
15:56.00, which placed him in third-place overall.
Fellow newcomer Justin
Loy (18:28.10) crossed the finish line in 45th-place overall,
just ahead of senior Justin
Cole (18:35.00) in 46th-place and freshman Jerrett Willis
(18:39.70) in 47th-place.
Freshman Trey
Crook finished with a time of 18:45.50, good enough for
49th-place overall, while junior Patrick
Williams (20:14.70), senior Paul
Steinke (20:16.30) and junior Jack
Zimmerman (20:20.10).
Both the women's and men's cross country teams will compete again
in two weeks, as GWU will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in
the UNC Invitational Meet on September 17th.
