VOLLEYBALL WEEKLY NOTES: WEEK 3

SCHEDULE
The GWU volleyball team will play its first home match of the season this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host the GWU Runnin' Bulldog Classic. GWU will take on Wofford at 7 p.m. on Friday night. The Runnin' Bulldogs will then host Kennesaw State at 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and will wrap up the two-day tournament with a 7 p.m. match with Weber State on Saturday night.

FINALLY HOME
The GWU volleyball team will play its first home match of the season this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host the GWU Runnin' Bulldog Classic. Last year, GWU went 8-8 at home, with the eight wins accounting for 3/4 of its total season wins.



WEST COAST TRIP WAS NOT A VACATION
Gardner-Webb's west coast trip to California was far from a vacation, as the Runnin' Bulldogs took on not one, but two top-25 nationally ranked programs in No. 11 California and No. 25 San Diego. Despite the two losses, GWU came played No. 25 San Diego very tough over the three set match, taking leads in each of the final two sets of play.



ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM PLEASE
GWU's duo of junior Laura Wilcox and freshman Tyler Cockrell were both named to the Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball All-Tournament Team in the Runnin' Bulldogs first tournament of the 2010 season.



OPENING WEEKEND
The Runnin' Bulldogs posted a 1-3 record over is first weekend of play last weekend, a weekend that saw five student-athletes see their first ever intercollegiate action. GWU started the weekend off with a 3-0 dominating win over N.C. Central, converting on most of their scoring opportunities. In their second match, GWU was able to push it to four sets with a third set win, yet was unable to upend the Hornets of Delaware State, falling 3-1. On the second day of play, GWU was haunted by errors and miscues, as the Runnin' Bulldogs struggled to pass the ball well and attack efficiently, falling to UTEP 3-1 and then Elon 3-0.



CHASING HISTORY
GWU Head Coach Chris Phillips is chasing her 400th career win, as she now sits at 399. With the Runnin' Bulldogs next victory, Coach Phillips will pick up her 400th career win, a coaching milestone to say the least.



GETTING A "W" IN THE SEASON OPENER
The 2010 GWU volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win in its season opener versus NCCU on Friday, August 27. It was the first time that GWU started out with a win since a 3-2 win over UNC Greensboro in 2004.

WHO NEEDS SENIORS!
The 2010 Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog roster is made up of 12 student-athletes and not one of them is a senior. Coach Phillips' squad is comprised up of three juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen.



SET-TLING IN
GWU junior Evan Moffitt will line up as the setter for the Runnin' Bulldogs this season, the position she was recruited to play coming into Gardner-Webb back in 2008. Moffitt, who played on the outside as a freshman and in the middle last season, will replace Regina Feagin who finished up as GWU's Division I career set assists leader.



NEW FACES
The GWU volleyball team will have five new faces on the court in 2010, as freshmen newcomers Erin Anderson, Tyler Cockrell, Emily Holte, Amanda Murphy and Meg Taylor will all see their first time as Runnin' Bulldogs this season.



YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED
While the 2010 team is very young with all 12 players underclassmen, the Runnin' Bulldogs are very experienced. The three juniors - Laura Wilcox, Lauren Evans, and Evan Moffit - all saw quality playing time over the last two seasons, with all contributing immediately. As for the four sophomores in Molly Rhyne, Carol Solano, Melissa Richie and Dominique Bray, all saw time as freshmen last season, with three of the four starting in all 34 matches.



LOOKING TO PROVE THEM WRONG
GWU's volleyball team will looked to prove the nah-sayers wrong, as the Runnin' Bulldogs were selected to finish eighth overall in the Big South in the 2010 Big South Volleyball Preseason Poll. The Runnin' Bulldogs were selected ahead of Radford and behind Presbyterian College. GWU went 4-12 in conference play in 2009 and will look to improve on its win total this season.



THE BIG SOUTH NETWORK

Gardner-Webb, as of now, will have a total of 11 regular season matches and the 2010 Big South Conference Championships streamed on the Big South Network. The matches that will be streamed via the Big South Network can be found at www.GWUsports.com or at www.bigsouthsports.com.



LOOKING AHEAD
Gardner-Webb will remain at home for its next match, a home stance against USC Upstate at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14th. The Runnin' Bulldogs will then hit the road for its final regular season tournament, as GWU will compete in the UNCG Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Gardner-Webb will take on Norfolk State on Friday, September 17, at 4 p.m. and will then face off with Morgan State, at 12:30 p.m., and UNC Greensboro, at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday.
