season this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host the GWU

eight wins accounting for 3/4 of its total season wins.
WEST COAST TRIP WAS NOT A VACATION
Gardner-Webb's west coast trip to California was far from a
vacation, as the Runnin' Bulldogs took on not one, but two top-25
nationally ranked programs in No. 11 California and No. 25 San
Diego. Despite the two losses, GWU came played No. 25 San Diego
very tough over the three set match, taking leads in each of the
final two sets of play.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM PLEASE
GWU's duo of junior Laura Wilcox and freshman Tyler Cockrell were
both named to the Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball All-Tournament Team in
the Runnin' Bulldogs first tournament of the 2010 season.
OPENING WEEKEND
The Runnin' Bulldogs posted a 1-3 record over is first weekend of
play last weekend, a weekend that saw five student-athletes see
their first ever intercollegiate action. GWU started the weekend
off with a 3-0 dominating win over N.C. Central, converting on most
of their scoring opportunities. In their second match, GWU was
able to push it to four sets with a third set win, yet was unable
to upend the Hornets of Delaware State, falling 3-1. On the second
day of play, GWU was haunted by errors and miscues, as the Runnin'
Bulldogs struggled to pass the ball well and attack efficiently,
falling to UTEP 3-1 and then Elon 3-0.
CHASING HISTORY
GWU Head Coach Chris Phillips is chasing her 400th career win, as
she now sits at 399. With the Runnin' Bulldogs next victory, Coach
Phillips will pick up her 400th career win, a coaching milestone to
say the least.
GETTING A "W" IN THE SEASON OPENER
The 2010 GWU volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win in its season
opener versus NCCU on Friday, August 27. It was the first time
that GWU started out with a win since a 3-2 win over UNC Greensboro
in 2004.
WHO NEEDS SENIORS!
The 2010 Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog roster is made up of 12
student-athletes and not one of them is a senior. Coach Phillips'
squad is comprised up of three juniors, four sophomores and five
freshmen.
SET-TLING IN
GWU junior Evan Moffitt will line up as the setter for the Runnin'
Bulldogs this season, the position she was recruited to play coming
into Gardner-Webb back in 2008. Moffitt, who played on the outside
as a freshman and in the middle last season, will replace Regina
Feagin who finished up as GWU's Division I career set assists
leader.
NEW FACES
The GWU volleyball team will have five new faces on the court in
2010, as freshmen newcomers Erin Anderson, Tyler Cockrell, Emily
Holte, Amanda Murphy and Meg Taylor will all see their first time
as Runnin' Bulldogs this season.
YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED
While the 2010 team is very young with all 12 players
underclassmen, the Runnin' Bulldogs are very experienced. The
three juniors - Laura Wilcox, Lauren Evans, and Evan Moffit - all
saw quality playing time over the last two seasons, with all
contributing immediately. As for the four sophomores in Molly
Rhyne, Carol Solano, Melissa Richie and Dominique Bray, all saw
time as freshmen last season, with three of the four starting in
all 34 matches.
LOOKING TO PROVE THEM WRONG
GWU's volleyball team will looked to prove the nah-sayers wrong, as
the Runnin' Bulldogs were selected to finish eighth overall in the
Big South in the 2010 Big South Volleyball Preseason Poll. The
Runnin' Bulldogs were selected ahead of Radford and behind
Presbyterian College. GWU went 4-12 in conference play in 2009 and
will look to improve on its win total this season.
