
GWU's Hutschalik and Stanton-Brooks Set New School Records at the Liberty Open

Lynchburg, Va. - The Gardner-Webb indoor track & field teams had a number of strong showings at the Liberty Open this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldog women's and men's team combined to post 43 top-15 finishes over the two-day event, highlighted by a school-record in the men's weight throw by redshirt-senior Christoph Hutschalik and in the men's 1000 meter run by sophomore Josiah Stanton-Brooks.
Hutschalik and Stanton-Brooks both highlighted the performances by setting new school records. Hutschalik broke his previous record in the men's weight throw event with a mark of 18.27 meters on Saturday to finish in first-place overall, while Stanton-Brooks set a new school record in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:32.52.
On the women's side, the Runnin' Bulldogs had a number of top-15 finishes in both the running events and in the field events.
Gardner-Webb sophomore Ivana Hughes picked up a first-place finish in the 500 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a personal best time of 1:18.68, while fellow teammates Cherish Richardson and Leah Steinke placed in third and seventh overall, respectively, with personal best times of 1:20.74 and 1:23.61.
The 4x400 meter relay unit of T'Keyah Bell, Amara Isbell, Richardson and Hughes took third-place overall with a time of 4:02.54, while Isbell picked up an eighth-place finish in the women's 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 26.84.
GWU sophomore Ariel Zimmerman turned in a time of 5:20.14 to place fifth overall in the 1 mile run, while senior Diana Palka crossed the finish line in 12th-place overall with a personal best time of 5:33.05.
Not to be outdone, senior Laura Scott posted a fifth-place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:37.32, finishing ahead of fellow teammate Elisabeth Sawyer who finished 12th overall with her personal best time of 10:57.74.
In the field events, sophomore thrower Ashlei Alexander picked up two top-five finishes, taking second-place with a mark of 12.57 meters in the women's shot put event and third in the women's weight throw event with a distance of 15.30 meters, a personal best mark.
Gardner-Webb had three student-athletes finish in the top-10 in the women's high jump event, as Sarah Herd took fourth-place with a height of 1.60 meters, finishing ahead of teammates Ann Marie Howell, who placed eighth overall with a high mark of 1.60 meters in her second attempt, and Caroline Arledge, who finished ninth with a mark of 1.55 meters.
Howell went on to take second-place overall in the pole vault event, clearing the bar at 3.60 meters, a new personal best mark, while senior Carrie Long finished in a three-way tie for fifth-place with a mark of 3.30 meters. Sophomores Taylor Cook and Bethany Wright also competed in the pole vault event, as Cook placed eighth with a mark of 3.15 meters, while Wright placed 13th with a height of 2.80 meters.
In the women's shot put event, freshman Kyntoya Hansford took 12th-place with a personal best mark of 11.24 meters, finishing just ahead of fellow GWU teammate Yazzming Lee who turned in a throw of 10.97 meters, also a personal best mark.
Lee also placed 13th overall in the women's weight throw event, turning in a distance of 12.73 meters, a personal best mark, finishing just behind freshman Jasmine Miles who took ninth with a season-best mark of 13.47 meters.
In the women's indoor pentathlon, a trio of freshmen competed for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as Kristen Hurley finished with 2982 points to place in sixth-place, while Olivia Moody and Katelyn Spiro finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th, respectively.
In the men's 60 meter hurdles, senior Johnathan Rucker crossed the finish line in fifth-place with a finals time of 8.21, while teammates Evan Brusich and Johnathan Parks finished 11th and 12th overall, respectively, with times of 8.73 and 8.74 meters.
In the 200 meter dash, Parks took sixth-place overall with his time of 22.85, while in the men's 1 mile run, fellow freshman Mike McClay crossed the finish line in sixth-place with a personal best time of 4:26.97.
McClay also placed 14th overall in the 1000 meter run with his time of 2:38.11.
Just like on the women's side, the Runnin' Bulldogs also picked up a third-place finish in the men's 4x400 meter relay, as the relay team of Brusich, Terry Davis, Parks and Stanton-Brooks crossed the finish line with a time of 3:25.79.
In the men's high jump event, Davis cleared the bar at 1.89 meters to finish in a tie for fourth-place overall, while in the triple jump event, Davis turned in a leap of 13.76 meters to finish in ninth-place overall.
Sophomore Clint McManus took seventh-place overall in the men's pole vault, clearing the bar at 4.35 meters, while Brusich placed 14th overall with his height of 4.20 meters.
Gardner-Webb's Travis Rogers and Carson Sears each picked up two top-15 finishes in the men's shot put and weight throw events, as Rogers recorded a 10th-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.46 meters and a 12th-place finish in the weight throw event with a toss of 15.15 meters.
Sears picked up an eighth-place finish in the weight throw event with a throw of 16.01 meters and then posted a 15th-place showing in the shot put with a mark of 13.10 meters.
The Gardner-Webb women's and men's indoor track & field teams will return to action next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tennessee.
