Gardner-Webb Runs at Charlotte Cross Country Invitational

Charlotte, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2011 Charlotte Cross Country Invitational at McAlpine Park on Friday.
GWU was 1 of 38 schools represented at the Invitational, as 289 runners from the women's teams competed in the 5K race and 260 runners from the men's teams ran the 8K race.
For the women, Ariel Zimmerman led the way, finishing 61st in the collegiate female category in a personal best time of 18:41.74. Next for the Runnin' Bulldogs was Ivana Hughes who also recorded a personal best time of 20:44.91. Leah Steinke ran the 5K race in 21:27.85 for the Runnin' Bulldogs, followed by teammate Amanda Hinson who finished in 21:35.32.
On the men's side, Mike McClay continued his standout sophomore campaign, placing 38th in the collegiate male category in a personal best 25:35.02. McClay was followed by Josiah Stanton-Brooks, who also tallied a personal best time, finishing at 26:19.43. Trey Crook (pr - 28:10.60), Justin Loy (pr - 28:12.14), and Drew Ford (30:20.90) rounded out the top 5 for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who earned a 23rd place team finish at McAlpine Park on Friday.
Gardner-Webb cross country will be back on the course October 14 at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., as the Runnin' Bulldogs prepare for conference championships in late October.
