October 19, 2011 | Volleyball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team will head to the South Carolina coast this weekend to play not one, but two Big South Conference road matches at Charleston Southern and at Coastal Carolina this weekend.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-14, 2-4 Big South) are coming off a 3-0 sweep of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at home last Friday night and will look to make it two wins in a row for only the second time this season on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Charleston Southern.
In the 3-0 win over the Asheville Bulldogs, seniors Lauren Evans and Laura Wilcox combined for a total of 25 kills in the win, while Wilcox's three total blocks gave her 223 for her career, placing her within five blocks of the GWU Division I record for career blocks currently held by assistant coach Bethany Martin with 228.
GWU will look to avenge an earlier season loss to the Buccaneers, who defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs 3-2 back on September 17th at the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
Gardner-Webb, who is only 3-8 versus Charleston Southern since 2000, is 0-7 on the road this year, which includes three road conference losses thus far this season.
Charleston Southern, who is 4-18 overall and 1-6 in conference play on the year, are riding a three-match losing streak and will look to get back on the winning track at home this weekend.
The Bucs are 1-2 at home thus far this season having defeated Campbell in Big South action back on October 1st.
On Saturday afternoon, the Runnin' Bulldogs will turn around to play Coastal Carolina at 12 p.m., high noon, in Conway, S.C.
GWU is 1-7 versus the Chanticleers since 2000, with their lone win coming in a 3-0 home victory on Senior Day in 2009.
The Runnin' Bulldogs suffered a 3-2 loss to Coastal Carolina in non-conference action back on September 9th in Conway, S.C. and will look for some retribution this Saturday.
Coastal Carolina, who will host UNC Asheville on Friday night, enters play this week at 8-15 overall and 2-5 in conference play, a half a game behind Gardner-Webb in the Big South regular season standings.
The Chanticleers, who have posted a record of 4-3 at home thus far this season, are on a three-match losing streak, with all three losses coming against Big South Conference foes.
