
GWU Falls on the Road at Campbell, 3-1, on Saturday Night

Buies Creek, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team fell behind early on two Campbell first half goals and was unable to find its offense, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Campbell Fighting Camels, 3-1, in Big South Conference play on Saturday night in Buies Creek, N.C.
The loss drops GWU to 3-6-2 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play, while Campbell moves to 4-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in its inaugural season back in the Big South with the win.
Gardner-Webb found themselves behind early in the match, as in the ninth minute Campbell's Jonathan Ray and Jhuvon Francis played a ball through the GWU defense to Ricki Gaez who made a cut past GWU goalkeeper Scott Krotee for the goal, putting the Fighting Camels on the scoreboard first at 1-0.
Both teams posted several shots apiece over the next 25 minutes of play, to no avail, as Gardner-Webb's Denzel Clarke had the Runnin' Bulldogs best shot attempt stopped by Campbell's goalkeeper Ryan Amons in the 26th minute.
Over the next 10 minutes of the first half, Campbell's offense was in attack mode, recording seven shots over that stretch. Four of the seven were stopped by GWU's Krotee, while one hit off the post. However, in the 43rd minute Franz was able to get one through, as he blasted a shot from 35-yards out that sailed into the upper right corner of the goal to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
In the start of the second half, the Fighting Camels' added another insurance goal in the 52nd minute by way off a header by Travis Golden off a corner kick, putting the home team up big at 3-0.
Gardner-Webb's Chris Davis was able to tally his third goal of the season in the 71st minute, as the sophomore forward took advantage of a turnover in the defensive third for the Camels and then posted a shot from just outside the box for the goal, cutting the Campbell lead to two at 3-1.
However, the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to score again over the final 19 minutes of the match, ultimately dropping its fourth straight match and second in Big South play.
Despite outshooting the Fighting Camels 9-6 in the second half, Campbell outshot GWU 18-13 for the match and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
GWU's Krotee had nine saves on the night in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the loss.
Gardner-Webb (3-6-2, 0-2-0 Big South) will return to action to take on the Presbyterian College Blue Hose on Wednesday, October 5th, at 7 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
Campbell (4-5-1, 1-1-0 Big South) will wrap up its three-match home stand on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against N.C. State.
