October 25, 2011 | Football
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Gardner-Webb freshman Trever Austin was named FCS National Placekicker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards for his efforts in the 26-24 win at Coastal Carolina.
Austin (Shelby, N.C. / Crest HS) tied a Big South Conference record with a 4-for-4 field goal effort, including the game winner from 31 yards out as time expired in Conway, S.C. Austin connected on field goals of 22, 22, 32 and 31 yards and made both PAT kicks to finish with a season-high 14 points in the win.
His first field goal tied the game, 3-3, and his second gave Gardner-Webb at 6-3 lead after a Coastal Carolina fumble - the first points off of an opponents' turnover for GWU this season. Austin's 32-yarder in the fourth quarter put Gardner-Webb up 23-17 with 2:06 to play, and his game winner lifted the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first win over Coastal Carolina since 2003.
Austin leads the Big South Conference this season with nine field goals and the 5-foot-10, 190-pounder has missed only two field goals inside of 55 yards in 2011. Austin has also been perfect on extra points, leading Gardner-Webb with 37 points scored so far this season.
He has been named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week three times already, earning that nod twice in the season's first two weeks and again on Monday.
Gardner-Webb (2-5, 1-2 Big South) will look to continue building momentum as it returns home Saturday (Oct. 29) for a date with Charleston Southern. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm at Harris Field/Spangler Stadium, as part of Homecoming festivities on campus.
