GWU Drops Big South Match at Charleston Southern on Thursday

Charleston, S.C. - Gardner-Webb was unable to extend a three game win streak and fell at the hands of Big South foe Charleston Southern 3-0 on Thursday.
The loss drops GWU to 5-7-5 on the year and 3-4-2 in the Big South. Charleston Southern improves to 9-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in conference.
Gardner-Webb was able to get some good looks at the goal early, as senior Megan Tremblay registered two shots in the first fifteen minutes of the match, including one on goal. However the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to achieve such looks consistently, and did not get another shot off for the remainder of the first period.
Charleston Southern's offense began to heat up midway through the first period, but keeper Erika Lenns and the Runnin' Bulldog defense was able to keep the Bucs off the board early. In the 17th minute, Anja Djumisic put a shot on frame that was saved by Lenns. Lenns recorded another save on an Emilia Faubert shot attempt in the 28th minute to keep the home team off the board.
The GWU defense denied the Bucs another shot on goal for the rest of the half in large part due to solid play from its backline defenders Addison Abee and Tina Frost to keep the score knotted at 0-0 going into halftime.
A goal early in the 47th minute by the Bucs' Morgann Wood put GWU in a 1-0 hole.
Charleston Southern's offense was able to maintain possession coming out of the break and kept the pressure on Lenns and Gardner-Webb. Wood broke through for her second goal of the game in the 51st minute to push GWU's deficit to 2-0.
Gardner-Webb's Katie Soles and Megan Reimer recorded shots in the second half, attempting to get the Runnin' Bulldogs back in the game, but both missed the mark.
The Bucs got a late goal from Toni Lashley to provide the final margin.
Lenns recorded 5 saves in taking the loss, while Buc keeper Amy Arroyo took the win despite not recording a save.
GWU faces an important match this Saturday at 12 pm, taking on Coastal Carolina with a Big South tournament berth in reach. The game will take place in Conway, S.C. and will be available for live streaming courtesy of the Big South conference.
