Patterson Named Big South Defensive Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE - Gardner-Webb senior linebacker Marty Patterson was named Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday by the league office.
Patterson (Mt. Airy, Ga. / Habersham Central HS) collected 13 solo tackles, one tackle for loss and blocked a punt in the loss at Samford in his second game back in the starting lineup.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder's effort marked the most solo tackles by a Big South Conference player through five weeks in 2011. The blocked punt was the first of Patterson's career - which has seen him collect 238 total tackles, 29.0 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks.
Patterson and the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-3, 0-0 Big South) get back to action this weekend, hosting league favorite Liberty (2-3, 0-0 Big South) at 4:00 pm in both teams' league opener.
The game, part of 2011 Family Weekend, will air live on ESPN3.com and WGWG-FM (88.3). All fans are encouraged to wear black as part of a special "Black Out" promotion for Saturday's game.
