GWU Cross Country Wraps Up 2011 Season at Big South Championships as Women Finish Eighth, Men Finish Tenth
Conway, S.C. - Gardner-Webb's men's and women's cross country team put a stamp on the 2011 season at the Big South Conference Championship meet on Saturday.
The Gardner-Webb women finished their season with an eighth place finish, while the men came in tenth to wrap up their 2011 slate.
In the women's 5K, junior Ariel Zimmerman led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs with a time of 19:04, good enough for 27th. Including Saturday's run, Zimmerman finished as GWU's top runner in every meet of 2011.
Juniors Elisabeth Sawyer and Ellie Glunk followed for Gardner-Webb, as each earned personal bests of 19:13 and 19:46 respectively. Rounding out GWU's top five were sophomore Katie Spiro and junior Ivana Hughes, who also finished in personal best times at 20:50 and 21:27 respectively.
In the men's 8K, sophomore Mike McClay finished up a breakthrough 2011 campaign with a personal best time, finishing in 25:14 good enough for 13th place. McClay was the top runner for the Runnin' Bulldogs in every meet this season, bettered his personal best in both the 5K and 8K, and earned his first collegiate win (UNC Season Preview) in 2011.
Sophomores Justin Loy and Trey Crook also earned personal best times for the Runnin' Bulldogs, finishing in 27:58 and 28:16 respectively. Sophomores Drew Ford and Jarrett Willis rounded out the top five scorers for Gardner-Webb, as Ford crossed the line in a season best 29:15 and Willis finished at 30:06.
