Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Scott Krotee collected six big saves on Saturday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated Liberty 3-1 in Big South men's soccer action at Greene-Harbison Field in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The win is GWU's second conference win in the row and pushes the Runnin' Bulldogs to 5-6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big South, while the loss drops Liberty to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Gardner-Webb's offense came out firing to start the match, as freshman forward Denzel Clarke put a shot on target in the early mintues, only to have Liberty goalkeeper Josh Pacella make the first stop of the match.
However, on the save the ball deflected of the Liberty goalkeeper and right to redshirt-senior Eric Asanin-Miroux who put the rebound back into the back of the net to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 1-0 early in the match.
Up 1-0 the Runnin' Bulldogs refused to take their foot off the gas pedal, as both Chris Davis and John Sargent put shots on line yet to no avail.
Liberty would make the most of their first shot attempt, as Travis Joseph put a header in off a free kick from fellow teammate Juan Nino, tying the score up at 1-1 in the 18th minute.
While the Runnin' Bulldogs failed to score on its next two shot attempts, Krotee was big in goal for Gardner-Webb, as he made a stop on a Nino shot in the 29th minute and once again in the 41st minute to keep the score tied up at 1-1 going into the halftime break.
The GWU defense and Krotee was tested early in the second half, as he made two back-to-back diving saves on two Darren Amoo shot attempts in the 52nd minute and then another save in the 54th minute on an Alex Verville scoring chance, again keeping the score tied up at 1-1.
In the 55th minute, Gardner-Webb posted three shots alone, as senior Richie Wall's attempt was hauled in by Pacella to keep the home team from taking the lead.
Both teams continued to search for that go ahead goal, when in the 84th minute Clarke put a header into the back of the net off a pass from Sargent, putting the Runnin' Bulldogs up 2-1 with six minutes to play in regulation.
An insurance goal came by way of Liberty, as the Flames scored an own goal in the 89th minute to push the home team in front by two at 3-1.
Asanin-Miroux scored his first goal of the season, while Clarke accounted for his second goal of the year.
