SEASON OPENERS
Over the last seven years, Gardner-Webb and head coach Rick Reeves
are 2-5 (.286) in season opening contests. Since transitioning to
NCAA Division I in 2000-01, Gardner-Webb is 3-8 (.273) in season
openers.
SERIES VS. NORTH CAROLINA
This is just the third meeting between the Runnin' Bulldogs and the
Tar Heels in women's basketball action with North Carolina leading
the series 2-0. This will be the first meeting between these two
teams in Carmichael Arena, as GWU hosted the Tar Heels last season
and faced off with UNC in the Dean E. Smith Center back in 2009.
UNC won the last meeting, 83-62, last season on Dec. 31, 2010. The
Tar Heels won the first meeting between these two teams, 81-65, in
Chapel Hill, N.C. back in 2009. In both meetings, the Tar Heels
were ranked in the top-25 nationally.
GWU VERSUS THE ACC
Saturday afternoon's contests marks the sixth time that the Runnin'
Bulldogs have faced off with an opponent from the Atlantic Coast
Conference (ACC). GWU is 0-5 versus the ACC with losses to #14
Miami (2010-11), #10 North Carolina (2010-11), #11 North Carolina
(2009-10), #1 Maryland (2006-07) and Miami (2004-05).
GWU VERSUS TOP-25 NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 0-5 versus top-25 nationally ranked
opponents since moving to NCAA Division I in 2000-01, with two of
those losses coming to North Carolina. GWU suffered an 81-75 loss
to #10 Oklahoma last season and an 80-62 defeat to #14 Miami in the
first round of the NCAA Championship Tournament. GWU also loss to
#1 Maryland, 83-41, back in 2006-07.
INTERESTING CAROLINA'S TID BIT
Last year in 2010-11, Gardner-Webb was one of only three schools
from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina to advance to
the 2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament (North
Carolina, Duke, Gardner-Webb).
(YOUNG) RUNNIN' BULLDOG ROSTER
Gone are GWU standouts Dominique Hudson, Monique Hudson, Sandra
Vaitkute and LaTroya Pope and in are seven newcomers, which
comprise up of half of the 14 player roster for head coach Rick
Reeves this season. Nine of GWU's 14 players are underclassman
this season, with the other five players consisting of two seniors
(Breynna Winkler, Brianna Dillard), two juniors (Cierra Harris,
Anna Dill) and one redshirt-sophomore (Kim McKenney).
FIRST HOME GAME ON TUESDAY NIGHT, NOV. 15
Gardner-Webb's first home game will be on Tuesday night, November
15th, at 7 p.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs will host the Lady Owls of
Kennesaw State in non-conference action in Paul Porter Arena.
