GWU Volleyball Set for Road Matches at PC and Winthrop This Weekend
November 02, 2011 | Volleyball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb volleyball team will wrap up their 2011 road slate this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road to take on Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. on Friday night in Clinton, S.C. and then turn around to do battle at Winthrop at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 9-16 overall and 4-6 in the Big South Conference, yet have posted a 5-3 over their last eight matches. However, GWU is only 2-8 in true road matches this season and 1-4 in road matches in Big South Conference play.
Head Coach Leo Sayles and his squad will look to avenge an earlier home loss to the Blue Hose this Friday night, as PC handed GWU their first home loss of the year, 3-1, back on Saturday, October 8th, in Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb, who is 4-5 versus the Presbyterian College Blue Hose since 2000, have lost five straight matches to the Blue Hose, including the 3-1 loss at home this year back on October 8th.
Sitting at 4-6 in the Big South Conference heading into play this week, GWU's next conference win will give the Runnin' Bulldogs five conference victories, the most conference wins that GWU has had in a single-season since winning five conference matches in the Atlantic Sun in 2007.
Presbyterian College, who is 11-16 overall and 5-6 in the Big South Conference, have won three straight matches, yet are only 4-6 at home in Templeton Arena this season.
Since defeating GWU back on October 8th, the Blue Hose are 4-4 overall with three of those wins coming in conference play.
On Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., GWU will look to compete the regular season series sweep of the Winthrop Lady Eagles, having defeated Winthrop 3-1 back on October 7th at home in Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb, whose win over the Lady Eagles earlier this season snapped their losing streak to Winthrop at five, has never defeated Winthrop at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.
Winthrop, who is 16-7 overall and 9-2 in the Big South Conference heading into play this week, is only a half a game behind Liberty in the Big South regular season standings.
Winthrop, who will host UNC Asheville on Friday night, has won three straight matches and is a stellar 6-1 at home this season.
Since falling to GWU, 3-1, in Boiling Springs, N.C. on October 7th, the Lady Eagles have gone 6-1 overall.
Both matches are slated to be video streamed by the Big South Network, presented by State Farm, and can be accessed by going to www.bigsouthsports.com.
