
GWU Has Eight Wrestlers Compete at 31st Annual Pembroke Classic

Pembroke, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team had eight wrestlers compete at the 31st Annual Pembroke Classic hosted by UNC-Pembroke on Saturday afternoon in Pembroke, N.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had eight grapplers compete in seven different weight classes at the open tournament against competition from schools such as N.C. State, Duke, Campbell, Limestone, Appalachian State, The Citadel, St. Andrews, Old Dominion, Newberry and UNC-Pembroke.
Gardner-Webb had three grapplers post multiple wins on Saturday in Scott Reilly, Robbie Golde and Josh Burns.
At 174-pounds, Reilly, who led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three wins on the day, bounced back from a second round fall 40-second s into the match to No. 3 seeded Bryce Sopko of Limestone to earn a pin at 1:54 in the consolation bracket over Bret Peltier of N.C. State. Reilly then recorded a 7-3 win over Jake Ferguson of UNC-Pembroke and a 14-3 major decision victory over No. 5 seeded Ridge White of UNC-Pembroke to move to 3-1 on the day.
However, in his next bout, Reilly drew Sopko once more with the winner advancing to the consolation finals. Reilly battled Sopko much closer the second time, before suffering a 7-3 loss to end his day at 3-2 overall.
At 133-pounds, Golde started his day off with a 7-3 decision over Anthony Thompson of Limestone to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Golde was handed a 9-2 loss to the top-seeded Matt Oliver of Newberry to fall into the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, Golde earned an 11-1 major decision win over the No. 4 seeded Casey Gashaw of St. Andrews before having his day come to an end in the very next round to No. 3 Tanner Bidelspach of Campbell, who eventually took third-place overall, in an 8-4 loss.
Burns, who wrestled at 157-pounds, suffered a 7-2 loss to Davis Bagwell of Newberry in the first round to fall into the consolation bracket, where after a bye, he went on to defeat Andrew Hayes of Limestone 4-2. After a medical forfeit win over Robert Munro, Burns battled the No. 4 seeded Jeremy Bomarrito to a near stalemate, before Bomarrito escaped with a 1-0 win.
Sophomore Aaron Rabin went 1-2 on the day at 174-pounds, as in the consolation bracket he earned a medical forfeit win over Chris Grimes before falling to No. 5 White 9-3.
Fellow newcomer Julian Ming also went 1-2 on the day, as after a first round loss to the top-seed at 197-pounds, the freshman earned a 3-1 victory over Demetri Logouri of Limestone in the first round of the consolation bracket. In his next bout, Ming was defeated by Dylan Ryan of Duke, 3-1, to end his day at 1-2 overall.
At 125-pounds, sophomore Jake Reinemund bounced back from a first round fall, to defeat Chauncey Foster of St. Andrews 10-4 in the second round of the consolation bracket. In his next match, Reinemund suffered a 19-2 tech. fall loss to Pat Seidel of Limestone to see his day also end at 1-2 overall.
Alex Hamm and Matt Kowalski each went 0-2 on the day in their respective weight classes.
Gardner-Webb (1-1, 0-1 SoCon) will return to action after the Thanksgiving Holiday Break, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Appalachian State in a Southern Conference dual match on Monday, December 5th, at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
