
GWU Wrestling to Hit the Road to Take on Chattanooga in Southern Conference Opener on Friday Night

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will make history on Friday night, as the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will compete in the program's first-ever Southern Conference match when GWU will square off with the Mocs of Chattanooga at 6 p.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
In Gardner-Webb's 2011-12 season opening win over Belmont Abbey last Wednesday night, the Runnin' Bulldogs picked up falls from Justin Kozera (285), Ryan Medved (157) and Justin Guthrie (174) to down Belmont Abbey 28-12. GWU took six of the nine matches, as both teams forfeited at 125, and never trailed en route to the 28-12 win.
This past Sunday, Guthrie (165) and Ryan Medved (149) headlined a group of GWU grapplers at the 2011 Hokie Open, as Guthrie, who took sixth-place overall at 165-pounds, went 5-3 overall on the day, scoring a pin over Nick Rex of Campbell and a 10-2 major decision win over Sean Brynes of Newberry. Both Ryan Medved, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, and sophomore Alex Hamm posted two wins overall at 149 for the tournament.
A trio of freshmen in Kozera (285), Davante Andujar (149) and Scott Reilly (174) all posted strong performances at The Citadel Open on November 6th. Kozera, who started the tournament off with three straight wins, advanced all the way to the semi-finals before dropping back-to-back matches. At 149-pounds, Andujar went 4-2 on the day, advancing all the way to the wrestleback semi-finals, while Reilly rebounded from a first round loss to win three straight matches before falling in the quarterfinals of the wrestleback bracket.
The Mocs are 0-1 thus far this season in dual match action, having lost their season opener at home to Old Dominion 31-9. However, the Mocs had two wrestlers in Nick Soto and Kevin Malone, place at the Hokie Open on Sunday and had four wrestlers chosen to the Southern Conference preseason all-conference team in Demetrius Johnson (125), Dean Pavlou (149), Dan Waddell (157) and Nico Brown (197).
