December 29, 2011 | Men's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb will get back into Big South Conference action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to face Radford at 2:00 pm in the Dedmond Center (WGWG-FM / 88.3).
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-8, 1-1 Big South) are in the midst of a four-game road swing, and have dropped two in a row at Wake Forest (67-59) and East Carolina (69-55). A bright spot for Gardner-Webb has been the continued emergence of swingman Tashan Newsome, who has turned into a viable scoring threat on the wing for head coach Chris Holtmann.
Newsome is averaging 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds over his last three starts, which includes a 24-point, nine-rebound effort at Wake Forest on December 18. The Albany, N.Y., junior has a pair of game-winning shots under his belt as well, putting back a miss for a road win at Chattanooga and knocking down a 17-footer in the closing seconds to beat Winthrop at home on December 3.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder is now the team's third-leading scorer behind guards Max Landis (11.3 ppg) and Jason Dawson (11.0 ppg).
Radford (3-11, 0-2 Big South) is coming off an impressive performance at ACC member Maryland, a 65-60 loss to the Terps in College Park. The Highlanders have dropped 10 games in a row under first-year head coach Mike Jones, but have been boosted by the scoring of guards Jareal Smith (10.5 ppg) and R.J. Price (9.5 ppg).
Price dropped in a season-high 22 points at Maryland and was joined by freshman classmate Javonte Green (6.4 ppg) with 17 points in that narrow loss.
Forward Jonathan Edwards has been a strong threat in the post as well so far for the Highlanders, averaging 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-8 senior missed the Maryland game with an injury.
Saturday's game will air live on WGWG-FM (88.3), with Fabian Fuentes calling the action from the Dedmond Center. The pregame show is set to begin at 1:45 pm.
