GWU Wrestling Falls to Appalachian State in First-Ever Home Southern Conference Match on Monday Night

Boiling Springs, N.C. - In Gardner-Webb's first-ever home Southern Conference match, the Runnin' Bulldog wrestling team struggled, dropping nine of the 10 total bouts to the Mountaineers of Appalachian State in a 41-2 loss on Monday night in Paul Porter Arena.
The loss drops GWU to 1-2 in dual meet action and 0-2 in conference bouts, while Appalachian State improves to 3-1 in dual match action and 1-0 in the Southern Conference with the win.
Appalachian State took the lead from the start, as junior Tony Gravely earned a pin over GWU's Michael Slaughter at 125-pounds to start the match.
After a point was taken away from the Runnin' Bulldogs due to unsportsmanlike conduct, the Mountaineers then recorded three straight decisions at 133, 141 and 149 to push their lead to 15 to -1 heading into the middleweight bouts.
Gardner-Webb then suffered a fall at 157-pounds, a forfeit at 165-pounds and then a 7-4 loss at 174-pounds, in which redshirt-junior Justin Guthrie looked to score and tie the match up as time wound down in the third period.
After a pin at 184-pounds and a technical fall loss at 197-pounds, Gardner-Webb freshman Justin Kozera overcame an early 2-0 deficit at 285-pounds to score a three-point near fall in the third period and earn a 6-3 decision over Brock Durfee of the Mountaineers.
The win at the heavyweight spot was Kozera's fourth straight victory and eighth on the season, while it also spoiled the Mountaineers shutout attempt, putting the final match score at 41-2.
Gardner-Webb (1-2, 0-2 SoCon) will have a few weeks off before returning to the mat on Sunday, December 18th, to compete at the UB Quad Meet hosted by the University of Buffalo at the Niagara County Community College in Buffalo, New York. The event, which includes Bloomsburg, Gardner-Webb, Pitt-Johnstown and Buffalo, is set to start at 11 a.m.
